This volume (3) of W. Somerset Maugham's short stories are the adventures of a spy. Maugham groups them so that they are an on going event. As he was in reality an intelligences agent in the First World War, his candid descriptions are very enjoyable. I am an avid fan of Maugham's and have just purchased through Amazon more of his books. My book shelf is getting crowded, but there is always room for W.Somerset Maugham!

This is a story of a spy during war time. This may be based on the author's experience. All of the stories are interesting and the end of its story is dramatic and impressive.

A truly wonderful writer of superb stories. A must for anyone appreciating this high level of literature - especially this collection for those who enjoy intrigue and spy-craft. Received my book, exactly as described, in 2 days! Thank you!

First time reader, well developed characters , dialogue and story line . Very sad I thought

This is classic English literature of the accessible and readable kind. Great stories.

A very interesting collection of short stories, featuring Ashenden, which I had only read in French when I was a kid; Maugham insists on the non romantis aspects of the spy's work (Ashenden spends most of his time in neutral Switzerland) and the last story has nothing whatever with espionage : it takes place in a sanatorium.His stories are much more readable than his long novels.

Have read these stories before but still enjoy them… this time even better as the print is larger and spaced better than the older Penguin books where the print size is much smaller…

Take some time to enjoy the writings of a true master storyteller who has stood the test of time . His writing style is as engaging to the readers of today as it was to the readers of his own era. In my opinion the strength of his writing is in his ability to connect on a human level, the multifaceted and flawed characters of his stories to his readers.
