The lathe was dirty throughout with what looked like grease but turned out to be more like grinding paste which would have caused excessive wear very quickly. All of the bolts and screws needed tightening. The stud which held the gear quadrant was incorrectly machines leaving the gears meshing only on the very edge. The toolpost had not been machined which meant that the turning tools supplied with the machine were too far above centre to work, I took the toolpost to a local engineering company who machined it square, the suppliers paid me the £60 it cost to have it machined. The top slide has to be removed to angle to top slide, the angle pate is plastic and accuracy poor. I really should have returned the lathe but decided the rebuild it properly using the skills I learned at the Colchester Lathe Company.
