Rescue of the Blackthorn Clan: A Couple's Adventure Module: OGL Pathfinder Edition (Date Night Dungeons)

A novel idea, and a great adventure for two (romantic or not!)
I purchased this as a date activity for me and my husband. We have fairly extensive D&D experience, but have always played with a group of 3 or more. We were pleased with the idea of a 2 person adventure where both players got BOTH the player and DM experience. The layout is great: four modules that are accurately playable in around 1-2 hours each, with about 30 min of prep time each to read the notes and print or cut out the materials. The book is a good guide, and it contains everything you need to play. If you don't want to cut things out of your book, online printouts are also available. The difficulty is EASY. Honestly, for a seasoned D&D player, it is too easy. But it's not too difficult to level things up to add some danger. Basically, we had some terrible rolls of the dice, and in most games, we should have been fighting to scrape by, with our heroes feeling like they could legitimately not make it. But we barely took any damage at all, and we had chosen all of the hardest options. An easy difficulty makes some sense, as the module really doesn't want the players who are actually on a date to have a character die. I mean... That might not be a great date. But then, without danger, the romance is kinda meh. So generally, I would double the HP of almost every bad guy and give at least one of them a stronger attack in every battle too. If players are new to the game though, maybe keep it as-is for a first play. The story is cute, and has some charmingly cheesy elements that made us giggle as we played. I can't spoil specifics of the main story or even the major side quest here, but we had an optional mini-encounter rescuing a deer along the way, which while very simple went so wrong it made us laugh for a good 5 minutes. Note however that this is not a deep or thought-provoking tale. This is a simple and quick-playing adventure that begins with the rescue of a damsel in distress. It is perfect for what it intends to do, and avoids over-complexity that would make it long or confusing. The characters are pre-determined, and customization is limited. I understand and agree with their decision to do this, but it is also my biggest disappointment when opening the game for the first time. In order to facilitate the story and make it quickly playable, back stories needed to be pre-made. Keep this in mind when buying if character creation is your favorite part of playing D&D.I want to mention one additional thing: flexibility. There is nothing in the romantic gameplay elements added that makes it overly hard to remove them and play this as a standard platonic module. You might need to tweak some npc dialogue slightly to avoid suggesting romance... But that is easy to do. Why is this kind of flexibility important? Replay! We can totally reuse this with our kids and friends! We can even play this as a group of 3 with a DM and 2 players. That makes this a better value and worth keeping on the shelf even after date night is over.Overall:I highly recommend this as a fun fast-play adventure for beginners or a unique model to use for advanced players that want to play for romance or without a group. It's clever and such a great date night activity!

Really fun for multiple date nights!
This was a very fun break from our typical homebrew setting or Adventure Paths we've been currently playing. We finished it in just under a month and have ended up keeping the characters we made to bring into other adventures. We only changed some minor things on the NPCs (mostly giving everything an advanced template) and completely made our own ranger and sorcerer while still pauing homage to the given stats in the book. It was cute, exciting, and like a classic Paizo module, leaves a lot open for the DM to play with, expand on, and fill in themselves. I look forward to the next Date Night Dungeon!

Cute and fun date night game.
I got this for a date night surprise with my husband. It was a lot of fun and the attraction mechanics were really cute. I really like that the module had us switch up who was GM.
