Cannon Quick Release

I purchased these to compare to the Scotty brand after one of the Scottys (Scotties?) came apart while I was retrieving the downrigger ball into the boat and pulled on the release cable. I don't think the force was excessive on the Scotty, but I bought the Cannon as a comparison.I use a Cannon Mag10 downrigger and am pleased with it as a brand, overall, so I expected the Cannon quick release to be sturdy. It is. The end of the cable where it connects to the swivel is better built than the Scotty. However, the 4 star rating is for the ability of the tiny plastic back cap into which the adjusting screw turns to fall out when fully turned out. A small gripe, to be sure, but if the cap is lost, the release is useless until you get to the hardware store and figure our a substitute. So, don't unscrew the tension screw all the way, and the device is perfect.The best feature of this release is the very tiny increment of adjustment possible for the line tension. If you have had premature release (and who has not?) a very small twist can allow you to make stepwise changes easily to balance between the line releasing too early or not at all for a smaller fish.Another quality feature is the premium clip used to attach the release to the downrigger weight. Finally, the release has a swivel which is a nice barrel style and should keep things nice and orderly down there.Nice value and an alternative to the Scotty at a slightly higher cost.

This is a great release because the lanyard provides enough flexibility during the troll that a fish hit is readily transmitted to the main line and rod before the release even triggers. Fixed releases without lanyards don't always do that.
