Q: Is it normal for slime to grow on them? Mine has a clear/grayish film

the film growing is a bacteria , sometimes its "thicker" if there not enough critters eating it off, or if the wood in new in the tank. it will normalize where its not visual over a little bit of time.

Any porous surface in the tank is good for beneficial bacteria to grow on. So, yes.

Q: How long do you boil and bake for hermit crabs?

You don't have to boil or bake before use. If I was to boil about 5 minutes minimum and longer if you want to release more tannins. Baking long enough to thoroughly heat.

Q: Do you have to boil them if you putting them in an aquarium? Will it make my water brown?

I personally boil these to make the wood sink to the bottom. Boiling also will take tannins out and it won’t darken water in your tank. Although a little of tannins is good for your tank water quality.
