CDN Floating Thermometer

I purchased this for brewing beer and it doesn't work at all... the "stem" isn't long enough to keep it upright as the top is heavy enough that it easily flips over. it barely floats at the surface and for beer, the foam/bubbles in the wort cover it up which makes it impossible to read.This might be great for stove-top still liquid measuring, but horrible for beer-making.

Here are the major flaws: 1. The transparent cover plate is flat and shallow. I bought the thermometer to heat milk. When I stir milk some splashes onto the cover plate and makes the dial unreadable. Then the film of milk must be wiped off because the liquid sticks to the cover plate. 2. The thermometer floats upside down if you simply drop it into a pot of liquid. It must be carefully lowered into the liquid. 3. The numbers on the dial are too small to easily read even when they are not obscured by splashed liquid. To make this thing worth owning it needs a redesign so it always floats right side up, a domed cover so splashed liquid runs off without obscuring the dial, and a larger dial. To its credit, it does accurately read temperature so buy it if you are only heating water.

This is a fine idea that just doesn't work! The metal probe that protroubes from the bottom is 1 ½ inches long. Therefore, unless your pan is very narrow and tall, you will need to cook over a quart of liquid before it will be able to float clear of touching the bottom and 1) rendering the temperature reading inaccurate and 2) even worse, falling over and getting liquid all over the face so that, in the case of an ice cream base that I was making, you couldn't read it at all. Of course, you could just stand there and hold it, with your hands inches away form hot liquid, and beginning to cramp from trying to hold such a small object. On the other hand, as far as I can tell, the readings are accurate, so if you tend to cook several quarts of liquid, it might be a useful gadget.

This thermometer tends to capsize, like others have mentioned. If the probe was one-half inch to one inch longer, it would have better stability. On the plus side, it is accurate and readability is good as long as the liquid is clear. My big complaint, however, is that the unit is not water-tight, which given its stated purpose, is disappointing. I have only had mine a few weeks, and there is condensation behind the glass.

Small, durable, versatile. We use three of these in our various cooling tanks after we harvest our meat chickens on our farm. The only major issue is that the thermometers want to flip upside down if there's any agitation in the tank.

This thermometer is Small. measuring across the face is 1 inch if you add the gray rim that adds 1/2 inch. So to read it you have to pick it up or get Really close. I think the picture on my computer was larger - YES I just measured and it shows up as 3 1/2 inches, but I have to give it to them, the dimensions are in the description...I just didn't read it closely enough :( so I added a star

floats on top, easy to read - get two to insure accuracy or use with conventional brewing thermometer. This is good to leave in while steeping without worry of breaking glass

Works OK for indoor tub but we were looking for something for the pool.This isn't it.

I am using this product to measure the temperature of my jetted tub as I want it at exactly 100°F for my bath. There are two things that would make it perfect. A different colour other than gray so that it would be easier to find in the bubbles. Also I wish the print would be bigger because it is hard to read when it is floating in the tub and I am standing outside the tub. It works perfectly.
