Product Description A ten year old girl is found brutally murdered outside the small blue-collar city of Rochester, New York, and obsessed police detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku) suffers a mental breakdown while trying to solve the crime. But when the child-killings resume two years later, Megan's return to the investigation also brings back her own horrific hallucinations. Even if she can prove a 'double initial' connection to the slayings, will she hang onto her sanity long enough to catch a psychopath? .com In the spirit of suspense films and television shows that focus on the sleuth’s attempt to make something out of senseless violence, Alphabet Killer is less about the murders it details than about the detective, Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who suffers mentally for studying brutality. Though opening scenes show young girls slayed at various wooded Rochester, New York crime scenes, the film quickly digresses into Megan’s stressed relationship with her co-detective lover, Kenneth Shine (Cary Elwes), who watches her obsession with the case spiral out of control. As murders continue, Megan gets psychic leads and is haunted by the ghosts of the wrongly deceased, but cannot solve the case. Megan’s diagnosis as a schizophrenic complicates matters greatly, and elevates the film into deeper story, especially when one senses, through subtle filmic clues, the creepiness of Megan’s therapist, Richard Ledge (Timothy Hutton). Some silly, dramatized enactments of mental illness on Dushku’s part do not help convince the viewer through fine acting, though one may be willing to look past this in hopes for pending potential spookiness. And the conundrum posed by Megan in her therapy group is engaging: manic people do often excel due to intuition, yet it is their ability to experience the world differently that gets them into trouble. Although the ghosts hallucinations are unconvincing, and Dushku probably could have used more research before she took the role, Alphabet Killer captivates because it shows how convoluted layers of reality can confuse even the sharpest detective. The disturbing thing about Alphabet Killer is not the film itself but the idea behind it: that the majority of what we know and trust is illusory, and that truth is discovered best through madness. --Trinie DaltonStills from The Alphabet Killer (Click for larger image)

Most annoying character every created
I was hoping this would be a good movie. It had a couple of good actors, and a ready made plot that could make things easy on Hollywood. Unfortunately, it also had the most annoying character ever created. Even worse, she's the main character and not just someone who pops up occasionally. She a moronic police officer, has no respect for the lives or rights of any else on the planet, and suffers from a huge case of grandiose self importance. she screams, yells, and runs around causing problems for everyone else trying to do their jobs. It really doesn't matter if she's ill, she was probably always incompetent. If the true alphabet murders were investigated by anyone remotely resembling this character, it's no wonder he was never caught. It's actually surprising that more people weren't killed by her than the actual murderer.

"Based on a true story"--not much
Being from Rochester, I watched this film to see local scenery and to update myself on that situation. However, it had just two quick glimpses of faraway buildings, otherwise was filmed elsewhere. There was an actual series of three murders with victims having double initial letters matching the suburb where their bodies were found, but that is where the similarity ends. Most of this film is entirely fictitious and borders on the surreal. If you like this genre, then this is for you. Otherwise, I prefer historically accurate films at actual locations.

Not Recommended
One of the worst performances I've ever seen by the protagonist. Most of the time I could not tell what she was trying to convey in her acting. Perhaps it was the inferior writing or the subpar directing or a combination of all 3 (bad acting, bad writing, bad directing), but not worth watching. It's a shame really, because it seemed like a good plot, but not well executed. At no point in time did I feel compelled to root for the hero. The murders were supposed to be brutal, but the direction failed to make us feel the brutality. I've felt more empathy reading newspaper articles than about what happened to victims in this movie.

At least Dushku gets the job done
While the movie its self is a mediocre story, Eliza Dushku does an excellent job portraying a detective that's snapped. However, the story seemed a little incomplete and unresolved, it kept me entertained and intrigued in exactly how everything was going to happen. When the main character has her episode near the beginning of the movie, it seems to be rushed into the story and almost out of nowhere. You're not given the proper information about any of her previous issues, nor are you made aware of her really, truly having any current issues. She simply goes from being basically okay and dedicated to the case to extremely unstable. It would have been nice to see more of a buildup and more to her past to truly connect with the character and the things she found herself going through. If you're a Dushku fan, I'd recommend it, she does a great job with what she's given. The movie is far from a masterpiece though so there aren't too many reasons to watch it aside from her. I should restate that; there aren't too many reasons to purchase the movie aside from her.

Great Potential Wasted Here
This is actually quite a decent movie until the third act, where it just gets very turgid, hackneyed and hokey. The drama around the personal and professional downfall of detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku) is well crafted and well played, and it just doesn't feel like something I've seen before, but every time the victims' ghosts appear to her I got the feeling that this movie might not be as original and fresh as it seemed. The ending has been dredged up from the very bottom of the filthy barrel of police procedural clichés. A real pity.

Terrible film, waste of money
Although based on a true crime, the 1st 19 minutes (all I could stomach) seemed to bear little truth and all sensation and trash. Don't waste your time unless you like this sort of thing.

portrait of obsession and madness
This is more psychological portrait than horror movie. Worth watching twice. The first time you focus on the plot twists and the trying to figure out the mystery. The second time, you appreciate how this is really a story of obsession and madness. The film is very well constructed and the understated acting of all involved, particularly Eliza Dushku draws you into the mindset of someone loosing it as they get deeper into unsolved crimes. By the end, you are seeing events through her eyes and it is difficult to tell what is real and what is imagination. All the more disturbing because it is based on a true story. As another reviewer states, the low light and washed out colors add to the atmosphere. And, how many films have you seen shot in Rochester?

Awesome, except it should have been set in 1970
I LOVED THIS MOVIE! I'm from Rochester, I remember the double initial murders, and I was the age of the victims when they happened. Eliza Dushku is great! The best part is the theories gone through in searching for the solution to this unsolved mystery, and they come up with some insightful one's. On an intellectual level the movie is very frightening because it deals with how fear affects ourselves and those around us. The reason I give this only 4 stars is because the movie should be set in 1970, but it's set present-time (and that isn't stated or obvious from the beginning) I think they must not have had the funds to make it a period piece. Scenes from Rochester were welcome, but I wish there had been more distinctive Rochester settings.

Marvellous Movie
Great thriller with marvellous acting that is appreciated and worth putting in my collection. Nothing worse than a serial killer which this is based on. When a ten year old girl is raped and found murdered a New York police investigator is convinced its true what she believes. I rated this an A grade plus for the acting and suspense that goes with this fabulous show. Thrills that hide around the corners and suspense that is chilling, based on a true story makes this worth viewing. Now everyone will have their own opinion and this is mine. I wont mention anymore as that will spoil it for you, become a judge and see for yourself. Enjoy!

Terrible Film
Thought it was going to make compelling viewing, I watched it for the first twenty minutes hoping it may have got better. It didn't, it steadily went down hill. Only grateful it was free with Amazon prime. Contrived 5 star rubbish.
