Horrid Henry Early Reader: Don't Be Horrid, Henry!: Book 1

Great introduction to chapter books!
My son is 6 and he just isn’t interested in reading. He will only do it if he has to, we even came up with a reward system for every book he reads. After World Book Day at school it became very clear that the majority of his class are reading novels /chapter books, whilst we are still stuck on large illustrated children’s books. We tried to encourage him to read Paddington and some other chapter books we have, but I think he found too much text off putting and wouldn’t even touch a book if you mentioned chapters! I have bought first three Horrid Henry books based on other reviews. My son got interested right away and just couldn’t stop reading. What a result!

Don't be Horrid, Henry!
This series of early readers are fantastic. The basic idea is to take one story from the usual Horrid Henry books and make it into a chapter book. This breaks up the longer text with pictures and makes it easier for newly confident readers to read alone. My kids have all loved Horrid Henry and these are a great addition for younger readers. This, first book, introduces Horrid Henry and his brother Perfect Peter. Guarantee all kids will adore them and they would be great for any boy who is a reluctant reader. Henry will understand all their objections to being made to read a book! As a reading mentor I always turn to Horrid Henry for boys that are struggling to discover a love of the written word and he has never failed me yet and neither has the wonderful, brilliant Francesca Simon. Her understanding of children, and parents, is spot on.

Great little book.
My grandson (aged 5) loves his new book as he is able to read lots of it himself. Lots of pictures and also just a few sentences on each page.

Good bridging level story, between basic phonics-based books and full story books
It is hard finding books for my 5 year old that sit between the early phonics books and full blown stories. This one fit the bill well - enough of a story to be of interest but not so difficult that they couldn't get into it.

bought for 5 year old grandson. he thought henry's antics were hilarious and the easy read version was perfect for him to read it over and over himself.
