Great book!
I found this book very instructional, as well as inspirational. I had checked it out from my local library, but knew I wanted to try some of the ideas so bought the book. I have made two items already - one a birthday card and one an embellishment for a picture frame.

Great projects
This book has been lots of fun. It describes many techniques and explains how to get the effect in easy to understand directions. There are also a lot of projects to jump start your ideas and to adapt to your needs. It has been well worth the money.

Nice book...
I would give better stars if it had a little more patterns/how to.It gives basic shapes and then some directions on how to make some items, then in the back it has several photos of the items made by author but no directions as to how she did them. Of course designs are more of a personal 'what looks good to you' thing but I was truly looking for a book with more patterns than this one has.I do love the authors items though, and products from her are wonderful too. Her website "Quilled Creations" is great and is in my bookmarks for when I need it. I've bought many of her items.

Start your quilling hobby with this Excellent book! *****
Ms. Bartowski does an excellent, calm, very clear and comprehensive job of introducing you to quilling -- beginning with recommended tools, discussion of various types of paper and enhancements, and then proceeding on to how to make the basic shaps that are the primary building blocks in quilling, very nicely photographed too. Projects specifically incorporate new steps / quilling shapes you've learned -- so I regard this as an A+++ primer for quilling (and I have looked at quite a number of them before finding this basic shapes book). Truly well written and photographed.

Good for first-time quillers
This book is exactly what it says it is. It gives an excellent foundation on beginner techniques, tools, equipment and basic design elements. The photography is excellent and in a format large enough to see detail. The typeset is a large font and easy to read. As far as projects, some are cute and some are, in my opinion, not what I would use. All are basic beginner projects. If you want instructions in quilled card-making then you might want to pass on this one. If you are a rank beginner like me you should learn all the fundamentals needed to move to the next level and a different book with more advanced composition and design.

Quilling made simple
This book does an excellent job of introducing people to the art of quilling - also known as paper filigree. While the basics are simple, the art can progress in difficulty as skill increases. This book looks at a variety of techniques, teaching each through a project, and then looks at how to combine techniques to make your own designs. Illos are clear and helpful, instructions also clear and non-confusing. I've quilled before, and used other books, but this one holds the place of honor on my shelf.

I'm so pleased!
I'm a new quiller and I didn't know what to order with regard to a book. I didn't want to get a book that's too simple, nor did I want a book that's too advanced. Well, this book is GREAT! It's simple enough for any new beginner and it looks to have some fairly challenging designs for the not so new quiller. It covers so many different techniques and there are so many patterns. There's lots of tips and tricks and all in all, this is a great book! Beautiful, colorful pictures on each and every page.

Fourteen techniques and eight projects
As a beginner to quilling I actually thought that quilling was simply 3mm paper and a quilling tool. Thankfully I ordered a few books that put me straight. This book starts with the very basics. How to make quilled shapes, types and sizes of paper and other tools. This is the first time that I am introduced to a fringer, a crimper, paper punches and a pick comb. Quilling was becoming complicated. I was extremely frustrated when it came to making paper flowers using a quilling tool but by the time that I got to husking I was at the point where I wanted to get it right and to learn the proper techniques. No more lopsided flowers for me.Beyond the basics introduces Christmas ornaments and quilled letters. Animals, crosses and minature figurines to a limited degree. This book didn't cover enough of the basics for me. Not because it was insufficient in itself but because it had suddenly openned up a whole new world of awareness and creativity. I wanted to learn more and more. Quilling was no longer about just creating shapes but how shapes and colour work together, presentation and creative expression. For a total beginner like myself this book has clear explanations and many pictures. It is a great aid and a good start.

Inspiring
Having recently decided to take up quilling after giving it some real thought (honestly, 2 weeks of watching online tutorials) I knew that I needed some inspiration and some instructions in a less digital format. Somehow whilst a video gives you the information you need it doesn't hold my concentration in the same way as the printed page. Having read reviews this looked like being an excellent resource.I am thrilled to report that those reviews are not wrong. There is a plethora of information in this book and it really does give you the basics. Some good tips for fixing unevenly roiled coils and clear pictorials for shaping the coils once rolled. Covers how to use the various tools and the best paper sizes to use depending on your intended use for the finished project. Even better, it covers more than just rolled coil quilling. There are sections dealing with comb quilling (looks relatively simple and gives some beautiful results) and also husking (looks a touch complicated). Some nice little projects to get you started and that use a variety of shapes and techniques in each one. Clear templates for you to trace are provided and there are also suggestions for tweaks you can make to the individual designs to personalise the end result.Gorgeous pictures of the authors finished works are provided and these are not just for the projects but also a gallery of what you can achieve if you just let your imagination lose. The 3D tableaux are incredibly stunning and it is hard to believe that they are simply made from paper.A beautiful book packed full of inspiration and a depth of knowledge about the subject that really invigorates the beginner to this craft. I can't wait to start working my way through basic coiling and shape making!
