The Landing of the Pilgrims (Landmark Books)

Excellent book on the Pilgrims
This is a great, in-depth overview of the pilgrims for children beginning with 'young Will Bradford' and 'Master Brewster' in Scrooby, England. It follows the pilgrims on their flight to Amsterdam and Leyden, then onto the Mayflower (and briefly the Speedwell), and finally their landing off of Cape Cod. It gives very detailed descriptions of the pilgrims' experiences -- often using direct quotes from "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford. We are homeschoolers and read this aloud over a two week period as part of our study of American History. I highly recommend it -- along with almost all of the other Landmark Books!

Early American History
We used this book in our homeschool to supplement our history lessons. This book is very easy to understand. And while we read it out loud, it could be read by a child 4th grade and up. It gives more insight into what those first pilgrims went through in getting to North America. The story is very straightforward and a little on the dry side. But in small reading sections, the kids seemed to get into it and retain a lot of the story.

A good historical picture
I like that so many quotes were pulled from original sources, such as the journals of William Bradford. I am unsure, however, whether the light in which the Indians were painted, reflected reality, or the prejudices of the pilgrims or even the author himself. I loved that Throughout the account, the pilgrims' successes were attributed to divine providence.

Makes you think...
I learned a lot from this book, since I barely remembered anything about the Mayflower settlement from my school days. It would have been nice if there were illustrations and maps. All through the book I kept thinking of what a glorious, wild land it used to be, and wishing it could have stayed that way. I sympathize with the Indians.

A breath of fresh air in a book written 60 yrs ago
History is being re-written in our omnipresent politically correct world today. The Landing of the Pilgrims tells the true story according to the original diaries of their journey, hardships and first and foremost why they left tyrannical England - religious freedom! This tiny band of Separatists from Scrooby fled England first to Holland to be able to worship freely. But even there, the long arm of King James eventually reached them, and after a few years they made their way on the Mayflower to America. Their leader, William Bradford held the band together through every hardship, never giving up and never losing faith. The truth gets out no matter what. I highly recommend this book for all young readers and adults alike.

Authentic account of an important part of our American history
An authentic telling of an important part of our American history, allowing children to see the true account of the pilgrims and their lives: their bravery, struggles, worship of God, starting a new life in a new world, meeting the Indians, etc. So much of what kids learn today concerning the first Thanksgiving is so watered down and embellished. It's refreshing to share such a book as this with them.

As interesting as it was when I first read it70 years ago.
I read this with a student of English as a second language who wanted something fairly easy to read, well-written, and interesting. Landmark Books, a series popular among my contemporaries when we were in grammar school, quickly came to mind. As she also is interested in U.S. history this turned out to be an excellent choice. Fortunately, the book is still in print. Although written for "young readers", it is well enough written to hold the interest of an educated adult reader. it's about a seminal event in U.S. history
