This is the 1st edition, which has been replaced by the 2nd edition. The Orton-Gillingham approach has been proven by many studies to be the best way to help those with dyslexia learn to read. An Orton-Gillingham based reading program is more than phonics worksheets and activities. A true OG reading program must teach all phonics sounds, spelling rules and exceptions in a cumulative, repetitive manner. It must be multi-sensory and be capable of being adjusted as needed. This approach to teach reading is also in alignment with the components outlined in the science of reading, a study to define evidence-based strategies for effective literacy instruction. The Blast Off to Reading Program, designed for ages 7 to 13, is rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach. It consists of a meticulously structured lesson-based workbook and an optional web-app accessible on any browser. The companion app, available separately, enriches the learning experience with teaching tools and engaging phonics games, adding a multi-sensory dimension that children find enjoyable. This versatile reading program provides phonemic awareness instruction, fostering understanding of the sound-symbol relationship crucial for developing strong reading skills, provides the evidence-based reading help your struggling reader needs using validated methods to enhance phonics, fluency, comprehension, and overall literacy skills, will help your child's spelling by integrating systematic phonics instruction, enhancing orthographic processing, and employing effective strategies to reinforce spelling patterns and rules, is easy-to-use, no lesson planning needed, and will guide you step-by-step, ensuring a seamless and comprehensive approach to fostering your child's reading skills. provides a comprehensive phonics reference chart conveniently placed on the back cover of the workbook for easy access and quick assistance. Who Can Use this Reading Program parents or caregivers, teachers in the classroom - economical student workbooks are available & lesson slides are available for the Smart Board, tutors - tools are available for remote teaching Review: Wish I'd bought this 2 years ago. Updated - continuous improvement! - Only on Lesson 7 and so much improvement! The only thing I would change is to order it sooner. Super easy for teacher/parent to follow. Lessons are challenging, but not too hard. I love seeing his confidence go up! Update: 3 months in and my son is almost reading on level. We are 1/2 through the program and he is doing great. I can't wait to hear him reading by the last lesson. I just went through and read the one star reviews. They are nonsense. One person looking for assessment; totally unnecessary. Just listen to your child read aloud. My son is reading a chapter book now and is so amazing. One 1 star review says the games are outdated. My tech savy kiddos still love to challenge me to matching. It's games, and kids love games (even if they look 'old'). Don't hesitate, this is totally doable for any parent and child. I sing the praises of this book! You have so little to lose by sincerely trying the program and so much to gain! Best wishes in reading and learning! Review: As a homeschool parent with a child that is dyslexic... - As a homeschool parent with a child that is dyslexic, this program is the best one I've tried and it's super affordable. My daughter has struggled with reading from the beginning. Her 5 year old sister had fully caught up to her reading level and she was starting to get discouraged. I too was becoming discourage and running out of ideas how to help her without getting outside help. What We Use: We started primarily with Phonics Museum by Veritas Press but it didn't seem to be cutting it. This year I started out with Easy-peasy, which I like but I knew I needed to stick with Orton-Gillingham philosophy so I switched to Explode the Code. My 5 year took off with that, but my 7 year old was not progressing quite so well. She does learn from it so finding this supplement is perfect. We do Blast Off to Reading with just her in the morning and then later do Explode the Code with both of them. It has been the right combination for our family. What Makes It Work: The ease of repetitiveness is what I think makes this work for us. She needs to do the same thing over and over to get it, but in other programs she would get bored. This program has the child doing the same things over and over but in different ways, so it doesn't "feel" like they are. It's made a world of difference and I highly recommend it. The website "app" is lack luster for me as an adult, but my child LOVES it and it is a "reward" for doing her work (even though it's really more repetition that she needs).

I'd give 10 stars if I could...
I am a dyslexia teacher currently taking some time off due to the pandemic. A former student's parent reached out to me wanting some additional tutoring for her daughter and after doing a lot of research, I opted for this program over others - it's very affordable, the kindle edition is perfect for remote learning (what I am doing), the short vowel sounds were exactly the same as what was already being taught in my student's dyslexia program at school, there are no additional tools or materials needed outside of the workbook, and I loved the addition of the games. I have been tutoring my student for 2 weeks now and we are both very much enjoying the program. I think what takes this book to the next level though (and why it deserves 10 stars) is because of the fact that the author, Cheryl, is so incredibly helpful. After making my purchase, I began to follow Blast of to Learning Press on Facebook and had to send a message when I came across an issue with my audio while using one of the games with my student in a Zoom session. Cheryl responded to my message very promptly and when we couldn't figure out the problem, she had me call her personally to set up a Zoom session so we could go through it together and try to figure out why I was having the issues while in Zoom. I was floored that she would take so much time out of her day to help out - how truly amazing! I highly, highly recommend Blast off to Reading!

A big help for my son.
This book has really helped my child. I didn't feel he was reading fluently enough for second grade and he struggled with reversals. Most of his symptoms disappeared half way through the lessons. it gave him more confidence in reading. Just the reversal games are worth the price. The only thing it could use is more reviews between lessons.

This book has been wonderful for my eight year old that was diagnosed with dyslexia at six. We were lucky enough to attend a school that cared deeply about every child reading for kindergarten. From this school, I learned about the Barton Method (expensive, challenging for a parent, but excellent) and One Minute Reader (excellent for fluency). The public school we attended did little to assist my daughter in her struggles. We pulled her out of school to home school her for a year to see how it went. Not only did she make massive gains in her other subjects, but this book was instrumental in helping her to learn the rules of reading. Her fluency has increased from 9 words a minute to 68 words per minute. The rules have assisted her in her ability to spell. I am grateful for such an inexpensive and effective program that truly helps struggling readers. Any parent can use this system to help their child in my opinion.

GREAT BOOK FOR A CHILD STRUGGLING TO READ.
I am normally not one to write a product review. However, I felt I had to comment for those parents searching to help their struggling reader. My 9yr old was just diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADHD. He has fallen behind in school as a result. So we have been working with different lesson plans all summer (including ones given by his teachers) and THIS BOOK is by far the easiest at TEACHING (for parent) and LEARNING (for child). It breaks things down into manageable portions that can be done at the child's pace. Each lesson can be done in 30-45 minutes or broken down if your child has trouble focusing. It starts from the beginning and introduces VOWELS & CONSONANTS. It may seem too simple for some kids who already know their CVC's (as mine did) but focusing on the SOUNDS that the letters make actually help them in breaking down the words for reading and spelling. For the first time, my child has written sentences on his own, without Mom or Dad helping him sound out the words. It's teaching him to sound the words out on his own and THIS is what I find so fantastic, because my child is developing the CONFIDENCE to read & write for himself. I wish I had discovered this book sooner!

Engaging!
I purchased this for my son and we really enjoy it because he is engaged in not only doing the exercises in the book but also enjoys the online activities and games- he doesnโt give me a hard time at all and looks forward to the games at the end so far we have been at it a couple of months and he is still engaged and is enjoying it all - I have seen an improvement in his reading! Iโve even recommended it to Reading teachers to share with other parents itโs a good supplement for at home to help children and a great bonding experience for parents and children to do together. I highly recommend!

Well structured and easy to follow
Tried this book with my 6 year old and shes made more progress in reading and writing in the last 4 months than she did in the last 3 years in main stream school. Easy to follow step by step for the parent to use and for the child to learn. So happy to have found this book as at least i as a parent can help her progress.

Amazing program
This is a truly amazing program. My daughter does not find it hard or frustrating to learn to read with this program and she is advancing every week by a lot. She loves playing the learning games and she enjoys reading. This is truly the only and best program in my opinion for kids that are dyslexic. I recommend this to anyone with a dyslexic child.
