SABRENT Tool-Free NVMe & SATA M.2 SSD Enclosure, USB 3.2 Type-C (EC-SNVE)

I use these to edit video directly off of and for storage. The first one I bought to put some 1TB SSDs I had lying around to work for a project. It worked well enough that when I later bought a 2TB SSD, I bought a second Sabrent specifically to dedicate to it, so I could keep large media on it and cut from it on my MacBook Pro. Real numbers, since "fast" is not useful: with a Samsung 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe inside, I measured 977.7 MB/s write and 906.0 MB/s read on Blackmagic Disk Speed Test from a MacBook Pro. That is the USB 10Gbps interface saturating rather than the drive, which is exactly what you should expect. Do not buy this hoping to see your NVMe's rated internal speeds. No enclosure on this interface will do that. What matters more for editing: it handles 4K and 8K ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 without issue, and Blackmagic RAW up to 8K. It only stops being viable at 12K DCI 60. I cut video straight off it without copying files locally first. The tool-free design is the real selling point, and it is not a gimmick. Most enclosures make you unscrew the housing, work the drive out, and reassemble everything just to change drives. With this one you press the button, the top pops up, and you swap the drive. No screws, no small parts to lose. If you rotate between multiple SSDs the way I do, that difference adds up fast. No heat issues at all, which was my main concern going in. NVMe drives in small aluminum enclosures have a reputation for cooking themselves, and I have not run into that under sustained editing work.

Pretty nice component. Had an extra 512gb nvme card from a swap and this works great as a scratch disc for adding photos to a photo frame. Install was straightforward, it includes a heat transfer pad (and extra one) and the finned all aluminum case is well made and feels solid. The outer area does warm up, but that’s exactly the purpose of the heat transfer process to air. It’s just warm to the touch. It comes with a C-C cable but I used an A-C as my desktop doesn’t have C ports and it works fine but a little slower transferring than the laptop with a C port and the included cable. It’s a non issue when just swapping photos back and forth.

I wanted to increase my boot drive storage. This worked perfectly to clone my drive. I went from a 1 - 2 TB boot drive in pretty short order no issues. It's very easy to install and remove an NVMe drive. The enclosure is made of metal so it's a great heatsink that doesn't get overly hot. Worked with no issues on my Windows 11 pro Dell PC workstation. I've installed the old boot drive in the enclosure, formatted it and now I use it as extra storage. Pretty good value for the money.

I purchased this enclosure to repurpose an NVMe SSD as portable storage, and it couldn't have been easier to set up. The aluminum enclosure feels solid and well made, and I like that it helps dissipate heat during larger file transfers. Another thing I appreciate is how compact and lightweight it is. It slips easily into a laptop bag, so I can carry a high-capacity SSD with me without taking up much space. Everything worked as plug-and-play with no drivers or extra software required. For the price, this enclosure offers excellent quality and performance. If you have a spare NVMe SSD or need a fast external storage solution, this is an easy recommendation. It's well designed, simple to use, and performs exactly as advertised.

I bought this Sabrent branded enclosure because I planned to upgrade my daughter's HP Pavilion "Gaming" PC model 790-0010. I also bought this HP PC from Amazon circa June 2018. The stock loadout of this HP PC had a 1TB WD Blue SATA HDD. Not too long into the life cycle of this HP PC, I bought a WD Blue M.2 SATA 512 GB SSD and installed it into the HP PC's vacant M.2 socket and migrated the WD Blue 1TB HDD "boot" drive to the M.2 SATA SSD and turned the WD Blue 1TB HDD into a data drive. This gave a nice performance boost to this HP PC. Fast forward October 2023 and my daughter is telling me how the 512GB SSD is always full. My daughter who is not overly PC savvy didn't even realize that the 1TB HDD was still there for data storage of things like pics, videos and things of that nature. Still, she managed to fill her 512GB M.2 SSD with Steam and Blizzard games and needed more space. I purchased a 2TB Crucial P3 drive during Amazon's "Prime Day in October 2023" event. Per Crucial's website this NVME drive would work in the HP PC even though it was NVME and not M.2 SATA. I used Clonezilla Live via bootable USB thumb stick to clone the M.2 SATA SSD to the M.2 NVME Crucial drive. So let's talk about the Sabrent enclosure. I selected this because it supports BOTH M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME drives. Other products that I saw supported one or the other but not both. I also have other Sabrent products such as usb to SATA/IDE cables for connecting drives via USB. The handful of Sabrent products appear to be of good quality. They may cost a few bucks more but I like the piece of mind of having a quality product. The enclosure is easy to open up and install a M.2 drive into. Here is my minor quibble and why I removed one star from a perfect 5 from my rating. And this is more on me an not Sabrent. So the product page on Amazon has pictures of the product and has a product video that is officially from Sabrent with a guy named Mike in it. The guy says his name is Mike so I assume that's his name. Mike is happily demoing and showing off the enclosure. It's a great video and I am glad to have watched it. That said, it falsely put me under an impression about the product's use that was not true. To be clear though, the false impression that I was under is clearly documented in the included enclosure product manual. Had I consulted the enclosure manual first, I would have had no confusion. Still, Mike's charisma and charm were intoxicating and I was instantly captivated and trusting of anything Mike was telling me about this enclosure. During the video, Mike claimed that this enclosure supports multiple size M.2 drives. To accomodate this , the video indicates how easy it is to move the "locking pin/nub" to the appropriate locking hole in the enclosure so you can accommodate those shorter M.2 drives. Fantastic! This is great! So the video gave me the impression that regardless of the size of the M.2 drive you are working with, you will have to install a locking pin/nub into the correct locking hole to hold your drive in place so as to close the enclosure. This is not the case. I gather that most M.2 drives are of the 2280 size and the enclosure has permanently installed a turning locking pin at the front of the enclosure that will lock a 2280 sized drive in place. The included locking pin/nub for a shorter drive is in the packaging but not needed nor installed by default in the enclosure. The vide with Mike in it gave me the impression that the locking pin/nub had to be manually removed and reinserted each time a drive was put into the enclosure. That is not the case. Again, the manual calls this out clearly. But I didn't look at the manual because Mike told me everything I needed to know. When it became clear that the turning locking pin/numb in the enclosure is not removeable and then when I consulted the manual, it all made sense. So the confusion is clearly on my end. I should have looked at the manual first. That aside, this is a great product. If you need to clone an M.2 drive to another M.2 drive, you need this in your PC toolbox. I wish the enclosed USB C to USB C cable was a tad longer but not a big deal. I would happily buy more of these and use them as glorified thumb sticks for discarded M.2 drives I have from other upgrades. Great product. Thanks again, Mike! I still trust and believe in you.

I am genuinely impressed with this SSD enclosure. The first thing that stood out to me was the sleek aluminum cover design; it not only looks premium, but it also gives me confidence that it dissipates heat really well during use. Most importantly, it solved exactly the problem I needed it to solve. It read my SSD drive like a charm. No hassle, no issues; just quick and reliable performance right away. The build quality is excellent. It feels incredibly solid, almost tank-like, and the full aluminum construction makes it feel durable and well-made. It’s also very intuitive to use. I didn’t even need to look at the instruction manual. I especially liked the lever mechanism, instead of dealing with tiny screws to secure the drive, the lever locks it in place perfectly, which makes setup much easier and more convenient. As for value, absolutely worth it. Honestly, the enclosure itself feels so well made that it’s worth keeping even if the SSD inside ends up being corrupt or unusable. Highly recommended!!!

Simple, easy, well built! I needed a way to access the files on an SSD from my laptop and came across this unit in my search. I am impressed by the quality and durability of the device. It is made from extruded aluminum so it will give me years of service and it is a fantastic heat sink and protection for the SSD inside. Setting it up could not have been any easier. Just insert the SSD into the slot (it accepts three different lengths of SSD), close the cover and plug in the supplied USB cable. I did use a USB-C to USB-A adapter that I had handy. The device is compatible with my Windows 11 PC and it showed up immediately once I plugged in the USB cable. A discrete blue LED indicator confirms connection, power and data transfer, which is handy. Even though I connected it to a USB-A port, data transfer speeds were still excellent. Connecting it to USB-C would have made it even faster! The SSD that I'm working with is a 512GB device but the enclosure can support a variety of different storage capacity SSD devices. That will make this a versatile device that I will use for both troubleshooting & repair work as well as for external storage.

The enclosure is so easy to use and fired up my retrieved M.2 PCIe SSD from back-of-the-closet hell. Now it’s working as a small, light, reliable, very fast external drive. It’s very well designed and even has easy to understand directions. Time to insert and use the drive: less than a minute. (Now that I know what I’m doing, it would take <10 seconds).

Arrived in less than a week even after ordering from a different country. Package was sealed and had everything as described. Put in an nvme drive from my old pc so I don't have to fidged around with the motherboard on my new rig (I'm clumsy). Works like a charm!

Jedyne plusy: Obudowa wygląda solidnie, a jakość wykonania — zarówno na zewnątrz, jak i wewnątrz — jest zauważalna. Beznarzędziowy montaż jest bardzo prosty (choć ma też swoje wady, o czym poniżej). Być może dla kogoś podniosłoby to ocenę do dwóch gwiazdek, ale nie dla mnie. Już przy pierwszym użyciu zauważyłem, że dołączony kabel USB rozłącza urządzenie przy nawet najmniejszym ruchu (może po prostu trafił mi się wadliwy egzemplarz, więc użyłem innego kabla wysokiej klasy), ale to był dopiero początek problemów. Urządzenie co jakiś czas samoistnie odłącza się od systemu. Podczas operacji na plikach doprowadziło to do uszkodzenia tablicy partycji. Zauważyłem też, że dołączony termopad jest za cienki i nie styka się z żadnym z moich dysków NVMe M.2 (Intel Optane 1TB, Samsung Pro 990 2TB, Samsung Plus 990 1TB, Crucial P3 1TB). Ponieważ brakuje tu oddzielnego radiatora, temperatura wewnątrz jest zbyt wysoka — to właśnie wada konstrukcji beznarzędziowej. Co prawda mieści się ona jeszcze w granicach normy, ale... zastosowany chipset to RTL9210, który jest powszechnie znany z awaryjności, zwłaszcza przy wysokich temperaturach. Inny chipset, lepszy termopad lub dodatkowa płytka radiatora rozwiązałyby problem. Spędziłem 3 dni na profesjonalnym odzyskiwaniu danych z uszkodzonej partycji, korzystając z moich pozostałych obudów topowych marek — nie było żadnych problemów. Dodałbym zdjęcia, ale byłem zbyt pochłonięty ratowaniem danych. Analiza: Technicznie obudowa trzyma parametry. Przyczyna nagłego rozłączania - urządzenie podczas pracy (kopiowania) przechodziło w sleep mode, co nie powinno mieć miejsca - to kolejna wada tego kapryśnego chipsetu.
