very nice shiny brass compass
I got this for my husband because he has a major pocket watch collection. I have just about run out of watches I can find that are affordable that I have not already got for him over the past ten plus years. I saw this and thought it was pretty, it was very inexpensive and that always helps. I thought closed it looked a lot like a pocket watch, when he gets it he will at first assumed that is what it is. I was right when he first pulled it out of the box I put it in he started to say thanks for the pocket watch and when he opened it he fell short mid-sentence and smiled real big and said Oh wow this is so neat a compass I do not have one of these. So my idea was pulled off without a hitch.... well one hitch... I had gotten this for him and also this astrolabe thingy that honestly I do not know that that is or didnt till he told me when he opened it one of the features on the astrolabe is a compass dial! If I had known that I would not have gotten this one. He never complained about getting two compass's this Christmas he seems to love them both. So all in all win win for team.

Bought as a gift
Bought as a gift for my friend. Goes perfectly with her favorite sing lyrics from Luke Conbs, Better Together.

You get what you pay for...
I bought this as a component of a muzzle-loader "possibles bag". This style of compass is not something I would choose to rely on for taking bearings/land navigation... get a Pathfinder, prismatic or lensatic compass for things like that, but I had hoped it would at least tell me which way was North in an emergency. Well, the brass case is well-made and functional but the compass needle sticks and is therefore not reliable. After prying the plastic compass works out of the brass casing, I found that it made a very nice patch box for pre-lubed shooting patches. I attached a short leather lanyard to the lanyard loop and hung it from my shooter's "necklace" where it is much more functional than the traditional gun stock patch box.So, in a nutshell, it makes a poor compass but an excellent container for patches and perhaps other items like magnesium wool for fire starting, small caliber round balls, perhaps water purification tablets and even aspirin. I may actually get more of these just for the case and if I get a functional compass out of one, so much the better.

Bad even for its price
It’s cheap and you can’t expect much for this price. But even for this price it’s horrible. I got it as a gift for a child, but it is absolutely ungiftable. It came in a cheap paper box already ripped. The compass was covered in dust and there were spots in its yellow body. Inside was cheaply made too.Even for $6 bucks it was bad. You can buy a better toy in a dollar store. And then I wanted to return it, It said that it was not eligible for return, though the selling part says “eligible”.
