Great format for a great story
This Deluxe edition is worth it, especially for first-time readers of this material.

Superman at its best
Great Superman story in the classic vein, just good old fashioned heroics.

Impressionante!

Who is the last son of Krypton?
I was a bit on the doubtful side about getting this book as I have most /all of the material in other formats but what the hey, it is a deluxe edition and the stories are pretty cool. This volume contains Action Comics #844-846, #851, #855-857 and Action Comics Annual #10-11. The original non-deluxe edition from 2008 includes only issues #844-846, #851 and Annual 11 as #855-857 were previously reprinted in a separate volume "Escape From Bizarro World" together with various Bizarro tales from the DC archives. I don't recall Annual #10 ever having been reprinted in its entirety but most of the contents have turned up in various collections such as "Superman Mon El" and "Superman vs Zod". By the way, the original was partially presented in 3-D and the book was accompanied by the requisite blue and red glasses but we have to make do with plain old 2-D in the deluxe version. Obviously, I have never cut out the glasses in my copy as that would make it less than "mint" condition...The main Last Son storyline is good and involves a tussle with Supes old phantom zone enemies. Richard Donner should be familiar to many readers as the director of the original Superman films featuring Christopher Reeve whilst Geoff Johns will be known to comic fans as a result of his much praised runs on various series and both these chaps have a good handle on what Superman is all about. What I don't understand is why Superman seems to have been ignored when DC were deciding which Geoff Johns series needed the Omnibus treatment as his run is pretty good. I appreciated some nice art from Adam Kubert and a script that is an easy read and doesn't overpower the artwork. I should also mention a very nice introduction by Marc McClure who played Jimmy Olsen in the original Superman movie. I was less keen on the Bizarro storyline mainly because I find the Bizzarros fairly unappealing as Superman villains - actually I'm not too sure why these issues were included in this collection as the publishers could easily have substituted archive material or some other Geoff Johns Superman material. Annual #10 is like an anthology of tales and inevitably some hits and some misses. Overall, a good purchase, especially if you don't have the originals but I still hope for a Geoff Johns Superman Omnibus which would include Richard Donner's contributions.
