Strategy That Works: How Winning Companies Close the Strategy-to-Execution Gap

A great read for any executive or business person who wants to be an effective leader
This book lays out the importance of aligning strategy and execution. Strategy is mich more than "talking a big game" and execution is more than hitting a growth target. A coherent organization and its leaders are those that sign these two elements of business into one powerful blueprint and process to achieve success. I just finished the book and am going to reread it again. In my opinion, the lessons of this book are to be studied and learned, not merely read.

Strategy That Works
Good read. Probably more geared towards higher level management. There are nuggets to pick from for middle and lower level management. The exercise on what makes a strong team was good to run through as a group.

Fantastoc read on history of "strategy"
Great easy read for execs struggling to understand why their strategies never succeed. I've always struggled to understand a good strategy from a bad one. The authors do a great job of not only tracking the history of commonly known strategies but then discussing their view - misalignment of a strategy to the core capabilities of the company.

Strategy that works
I like the focus on organisational capabilities as being key to execution. I would have liked to have seen those broken down and challenged a bit more. An interesting read.

So You Thought You Know What Works
One of the most significant books on business strategy. Business leaders who don't understand the essential principles in this book are not likely to be effective. Excellent analyses of how leading companies are using these principles.

Garbage full of unoriginal clichés and pompous language - devoid of substance
In an attempt to brand a strategy offering for the dying Strategy& (ex Booz), the authors rehash the same old same old presented in their earlier books. This books is very unoriginal and is as boring as Monitor's "Play to Win" (which it clearly attempts to emulate), or "Competing for the future" (from which it borrows heavily on jargon).Three main problems make this book worthless:1) Small Sample - the books relies on 14 companies to make general statements about the whole universe. The methodology is very "qualitative research" oriented, with no hard figures used to illustrate actual points.2) Questionable language - the authors describe "puretones way to play" as systems of capabilities (i.e aggregators, reputation players, consolidators, etc) that companies can develop towards a direction. In practice, this is in fact tautological, as capabilities required are implied in the business model pursued. Google does not need to have a physical distribution channel like IKEA, because it is in a different business. If Google would purse physical distribution, it would shift its business from being a platform, and no longer need its current capabilities. By the author's language, Google can simply mix and match whatever puretones it likes.3) Questionable logic - the authors suggest that companies should develop areas that they are good at. They constantly repeat this mantra in a manner that detaches from the market, questioning the validity of benchmarking, market trends, etc. I wonder what the traditional brick and mortar banks or bookshops (strong on traditional distribution) would think of this advice, in light of loosing sales to the new digital competitors. Conclusion: A book written by career-consultants that couldn't make it to MBB and never actually ran a real business. Save your money - more concise and better structured strategy are available.
