kohila - One of the best books I've ever read
Kohila is the second best book I've read by Amy Carmichael. I would probably rate IF the best due to it's intense spiritual content. But back to Kohila...It is the story of Kohila, a little girl raised by Amy Carmichael at a place called Dohnavur which she founded in India. Amy was a missionary to India. Amy rescued and raised many girls who were orphaned and/or in danger of becoming temple prostitutes.Amy tells Kohila's story in stages, with many spiritual insights along the way. I got many nuggets of truth and help out of this book. It is much more than a biography. Amy believed strongly in truth and truthfulness as a necessary Christian virtue. She tells a very interesting story about Kohila and how she learned to be totally honest and truthful in all areas of her life. I feel that truthfulness in today's society is lacking and "little white lies" are a way of life now. This is much to our detriment. If we could learn like Kohila to value God's priorities and ways, our world would become so very much better than it is.If you can find an original hardback, not a reprint, it has pictures, which adds so much to the story. A wonderful book to read and gives an idea of what life in Dohnavur was like on a day to day basis.Another book written by Amy similar to this but larger, and not limited to writing about just one of her children, but many, is Lotus Buds. Also a great read. I highly recommend both of these books.
