Classical Solar Returns

Most interesting book on solar returns that I have come across! But many chart errors throughout the book!
From the other more negative reviews I was not expecting to love this book, but bought it anyway because I am interested in learning more about traditional and ancient astrology. I am happily surprised. It's not an easy book, especially if you are not familiar with traditional concepts. I had to look up a few words. I have to concentrate and focus as I read to integrate the material, but when I do it makes so much sense. Each chapter starts with a list of ancient aphorisms about the subject in question that I find myself studying and referring back to over and over again. The book is mostly analyses of various people and their solar returns over key years in their lives -- a format that I was disappointed with at first, but once I started reading through them I was completely engaged, because they are so well done and thought provoking. My only complaint is that as another reviewer mentioned, there are many errors in the book, i.e. wrong charts or duplicates etc, posted with the text. I contacted the publisher and so far all they have said is that they will make a note about the errors I mentioned. That was disappointing.

A shallow look at the traditional techniques
I found that the other review besides mine is quite confusing, but I am also quite disappointed.Ms Lehman had some good books in traditional astrology, like her book on horary astrology. This book is not in the same standard, in my opinion.Ms Lehman gives a brief review of several authors, but didn't incorporate most of the material in her own practice. Specially Abu Mashar's "on solar revolution" and his work with primary directions and cronocrators combined with solar returns. If I would have to summerize the book it would be: "do solar returns as if they were an horary".I think is a poor book. None of the examples are real predictions (the same problem as in Anthony Louis book, we get to wander if the author ever did SRs for themselves family or clients) and are only explanations after the fact. It is too easy to say "she got pregnant and her moon is within the 5th house". In one of the examples, Dr Lehman says that such problem was caused because of the moon aflicted, but in no way offered an explanation of why this moon affected the health (it didn't ruled the ASC or anything like it) and not the mother or the womb, or anything like that.I give just an average. This is not a book that will help you learn solar returns or help you learn how the ancients did them.

classical solar returns
I was extremely disappointed to see that it was all about different personalties and their various solar returns for specific incidents in their lives. I was hoping that the book would offer information on how to interpret personal solar returns. Hence, my disappointment. I will keep looking to Amazon to offer such books.

It's a fairly heavy book and would probably be good for holding open a screen door
Very confusing. The charts and text don't match. I read the first three chapters and gave up. I thought I would learn something about solar return charts, but mostly its about historical figures and interpretations based on historical records. It's a fairly heavy book and would probably be good for holding open a screen door.

WARNING: Riddled with errors and missing charts.
I have to qualify this review: it's a review of the book itself, not of the actual content. I can't imagine this book ever saw an editor. There are innumerable egregious errors — most distressingly that a large percentage of the illustrations are wrong (natal charts repeated multiple times instead of the solar return chart being referenced and discussed) — that make the book frustrating at best.I've had the book for years, but only started to work through it recently. Apparently, I'm the first person to do so, because when I contacted the publisher about reprints, corrections, or errata, they had no idea there were so many fundamental problems with the book. These are OBVIOUSLY the fault of the publisher, although I can't imagine why they weren't caught and corrected during galley proofs. As for the content of the book, it's not for beginners, or astrologers unfamiliar with classical astrology and essential dignities. It does, however, present a compelling exploration of how Solar Return charts were interpreted for thousands of years — and shows how these techniques hold relevance today. The fact that interpreting a solar return requires that you have a thorough understanding of the natal chart first, makes this book an intermediate or advanced astrology book. It's not a "how to" cookbook, and it doesn't provide pat answers. It's a book that requires serious attention and study — something that would be easier, and more profitable if the book actually contained all of the charts it references. If you're serious about learning how to work with Solar Returns, this is an excellent starting point. But you're going to have to run all of the charts and all of the returns yourself if you want to follow along with the interpretations.
