The latest in Spike Lee's Chronicles of Brooklyn series (which also include SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT, DO THE RIGHT THING, CROOKLYN, CLOCKERS, and HE GOT GAME), RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale, a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather's constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik's summer appears to be a total disaster—until he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he'd ever imagined.

Worth a view
I LOVE Spike Lee. I like this film. A privileged young man from ATL is sent to spend a summer in Red Hook, with a grandfather he never knew. The young man gets discouraged by the rules, the food, the neighborhood, and grandpa constantly trying to get the youngster to Jesus. He meets a young lady who becomes a confidant, an ally, and a friend. A shocking secret is revealed during a service that makes the youngster wonder about his grandfather, the relationship between his mother and grandfather, and the grandfather and God. So glad I got this. It's worth a view.

Summer of Growth And Truth Revealed
Enjoyable, entertaining multi-dimensional, multi-layered story that brings attention to social issues, some seldom talked about. That is what I've come to expect from Spike Lee movies and what I like the most about them. Overall this film is light-hearted but does contain some extremely difficult to watch scenes which are important to the storyline. The writing, directing, acting, cinematography and production are excellent. I was wonderfully impressed with the fantastic performances of the two young novice actors (Jules Brown and Toni Lysaith). Special Features: Director's Commentary By Spike Lee - Music Video - Behind The Scenes Featurette are included in this release. All the special features are worth watching. This is the first time I have watched an entire film with the director's commentary and it was a great experience. At the beginning of his commentary Mr. Lee explains why I was not able to see this movie at the theater. I am glad that this direct to video has been made available through Amazon. Additional kudos for the inclusion of 'Want You To Know' by Rotary Connection at the end of the movie, which made the sweet ending even sweeter.

Spike does it again in a masterful film that exposes the truth about religion
RHS belongs right up there with some of Spike's best work and is another wonderful addition to his vast and diverse canon of work. In this film he exposes religion (especially born-again Christianity,) for what it really is- a destructive and hypocratic form of judging people when we all are guilty and at the same time we are all equal. The acting is superb. Clarke Peters in the main character of the bishop is amazing and should be given an Oscar nod, but of course he won't. In fact, more than likely this film will go largely unnoticed by the film community at large because of it's subject matter. Give the studio a film like Inside Man or 25th Hour and it will make millions but oh no, not a film about real life and real issues that plague our world, don't do that!

I'm a Big Spike Lee Fan
This one took me off guard, I think Spike is a genius. I felt my timing in watching this movie was off, if I were to have watched it when all of the accusations were made against Bishop Eddie Long then I think it would have moved me even more. At first I thought it was bizarre and out of nowhere, however, when a issue like this reveals itself then it is just like that; out of no where. No one can believe it and it becomes a total shocker/upset. The "new" truth is revealed. This movie shocked me but also made me replay what happened and understand the issues clearer and realize what just took place really happens.

A BLAST FROM SPIKE LEE'S PAST
An underrated Spike Lee gem, which had a very limited release late in Summer 2012. This is one worth checking out. The acting of Clarke Peters really stands out in the lead role. Even Spike himself recreates one of his most memorable movies role, that of Mookie from Do The Right Thing, who continues to deliver pizza for Sal's Famous Pizzeria in Brooklyn. Also back from an earlier Spike Lee joint: Tracy Camilla Johns, who reprises her earlier role as Nola Darling, the female protagonist from She's Gotta Have it, albeit in a quite different way here.

Weird Movie
I have always liked Spike Lee's movies in the past. I have to say that this was an interesting movie in that usually Spike Lee has a clear message enveloped in his movies but I just didn't get it when it comes to this movie. There were parts that I followed and some that I didn't. I felt that the ending was equally as confusing.

Perfect quality...good film
Classic Spike Lee film, albeit gentler than his more renowned work. Disc plays flawlessly, & represents super value for money...
