Why do all the pictures show the lights with no wires going to them?

None of these answers are complete. I've got a few of these. They have a built-in battery, but most people (including me), keep them plugged in to the wall outlet. You could take one outdoors to use on the patio completely wirelessly. You do NOT have to use it in conjuction with the "brain unit" which is the Philips hub, although you'll get greatly increased functionality if you do. But they will do some nice things without it (including a candlelight flicker effect). The fact that they are battery powered makes them quite nice for a power outage in fact. You can also press and hold (without the "brain unit" to select from a wide spectrum of light colors). Hope this helps.

What is different between the Bloom and the Iris?

The Bloom has a lower light output at 120 lumens. The Iris, on the other hand, is brighter at 210 lumens. The Iris creates a more concentrated spot on the wall. If placed a little farther away it can also do a color wash on a larger wall since it has more light output. The Iris is also more stylish and more suited to sitting on a table, if that sort of thing matters to you. I believe the Iris has an automatic color-changing mode, too, where as the Bloom would have to have an app running on a controlling device if you wanted it to cycle through colors.

Is this light bright enough to read by? I'd like to use it in a dark room where others are watching a movie and I want to read.

The Hue Go is 300 lm and when connected to the Hue System can be adjusted to the "Read" scene which is perfect for reading.

Is the light powered by a chord or is it battery operated?

Some of the responses about this issue are confusing.   To be clear, these are NOT battery powered.  The "Bloom" lights are powered only by a cord with no battery.   The Hue "Go" is a battery or power cord light.  I actually called Phillips to confirm before buying.   Also, a really good way to look up information about Hue products is  www.huetips.com
