Q: How long is the pick end of the tool -- not the total head length -- just the pick, from handle to tip of pick?

Measured from top of the pick, I come up with 4 1/8 inches.

Q: can i use this to dig up sod?

This is basically a hand tool. It could dig up a small area of sod at a time, and you would be on your hands and knees. It would not be impossible; but I’d never use this tool for that job. I’m using it to chop notches for steps into a hillside, and clear the ground cover around them, which is also slow and tedious....so I know this COULD chop sod. It’s just not easy. But to dig up a yard’s worth of sod, I’d rent a machine.

Q: Can I buy a replacement handle separately? Thanks.

I'm not sure where you can buy replacement handles but I'm sure you can get them. Maybe by contacting the producer of the item.
