After a brief introduction, we follow Hockney’s career in chronological order from his mid-teens through to 2016 and the approach of his eightieth birthday. What I felt this book does really well is not only to show how productive Hockney is as an artist, but also to put the sheer size of some of his pieces of art in context. It’s all very well to be given the measurements of a painting, or print (and this book certainly includes those details, and more), but the in-gallery/exhibition photos really help to put this into perspective, whilst those taken in various studios also give a feel for how the artist works. Along-side this, the chronological presentation shows not only how Hockney has grown as an artist, but also when those changes occurred and an insight into what inspired and informed them. Overall: A gorgeous book to browse through - it always makes me smile.
