へイヤーの登場人物は放蕩者と書かれたら本当に放蕩者。主人公ヴィダルも、ちょっといかさまと非難されたらすぐに決闘。ほとんど相手を殺しかけ、ひとまずフランスに逃げることになる。この際、浮気者と見透かしたメアリーの妹を誘い、彼女もそれに応じる。待ち合わせの手紙は、たまたまメアリーの元へ。メアリーは妹を救うこと、相手を諌めることを目的に黙って待ち合わせ場所に行き，そのまま気付かれることなくフランスへの船の出る港へ。この辺りから，小説はがぜん面白くなる。　わがままで放蕩者で危険なヴィダルも、良識もあり、将軍だった祖父に似たのか意外に戦略家で行動力のあるエレノアも、脇を固める者達も、実に生き生きと描かれている。　めちゃくちゃな行動をするヴィダルに眉をひそめないのは、彼がへイヤーの別の作品　"These old shade "　の主人公達の一人息子で親近感がもてるせいかもしれない.

An intensely romantic novel which shows two people of opposite natures falling in love. The plot is fast-paced and full of twists. The heroine seems prosaic but the hero is unpredictable. All girls will love him!!!

Difficult though it is to rate Heyer 's books, this one's my favourite. Great characters

Devil's Cub is an enjoyable audiobook even though the story is a little shallow in my opinion but it develops nicely throughout the book. I'm not convinced that the change from a detestable rake into a lovable man is even close to reality but of course it's nice to believe that it could happen. I think that others of Heyer's characters are more likely to reform their lifestyle than Dominik is.I had a little difficulty to adjust to Dominik's way of talking. He is of course ment to sound arrogant and detestable but it makes it really hard to like him in the end.It is a nice book but it's not my favourite one. I liked his father's story (These old shades) better.
