Yes, it is the same as stainless. Matte simply refers to the "soft" - not shiny finish. We have had ours for a year and a half - use it almost daily and it looks as good as new.

Does the matte finish scratch? Also, I'm wondering why the dimensions are different from the black and white models?

I have the black and stainless. I have had for 2 years and very little scratches. I'm very pleased - best manual wine opener.

Is the bottle opener battery powered or electric?

It's neither battery nor electric powered but completely manual. I found it very easy to use. It is far better than all other manual bottle openers I have.
