Works Extremely Well - Here is Why I Use It
I am a fan of Irwin Naturals product line, so when I was looking for a carb blocker and saw they had one in their product line, I had to try it.I first tried a carb blocker about 4 years ago just by reading through a Vitacost website, but I never really tried it faithfully until the last 3 months or so. Last year (July 2014), I decided to try once again to lose weight, and found my way to a ketogenic "diet". It's not that I never could lose weight eating sweet potatoes, but I needed something that would help me keep it off since I was tired of losing the same 60lbs over and over again. I did successfully lose 95lbs, but after experimenting with some intermittent fasting, found myself with cravings I hadn't had for the entire year. This is where a carb blocker steps in and helps me control the water weight gain and blood sugar spikes, so long as I have reasonable expectations of what its role is in my nutrition plan. The only carb blocker I tried was one I purchased from Vitacost 3 or 4 years ago, and it was simply the white kidney bean, and it DOES work, but I was left with colicky abdominal pain (depending on how much I took!) that left me writing on the couch, and it always left me wondering if that slice of pizza was really worth it!! When my husband and I were out over the weekend, I always wondered WHY I didn't have my carb blocker to negate the breakdown of carbohydrate, but oh yeah, then I would remember how bloated I would feel after taking it and the abdominal pain was unbearable - and nothing seemed to calm it down! This is where I am glad I found this product. The list of ingredients is fairly impressive, except for the cinnamon - 100mg of cinnamon isn't really going to do much to lower your blood sugar, especially not when it comes to consuming refined carbohydrate. This product also has a small amount of digestive enzymes as well as ginger, which helps digest the food (in turn reducing intestinal cramping). Here is why I would use a product like this: In following a ketogenic way of eating still 1.5 years later, I eat plenty of protein, round out my nutrition with good fats and yes, sometimes I decide I want a couple of slices of pizza, or Indian food with a 1/4 cup of basmati rice, but one, if I consume too many carbohydrates at once, I get mad palpitations, have abnormal blood sugar responses and at times have even felt ill. I am NOT recommending anyone do what I do, but it works for me, which is why I continue to do it! If I decide to consume a couple of slices of pizza, something I rarely eat, but just get a hankering to do so, I take 4 capsules of this product (the bottle says 2 capsules, but I want to make SURE it impairs carb digestion haha). I also take 2 capsules of Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil (fabulous product, by the way!). About a half hour after I eat, I am notorious for taking Jarrow Glucose Optimizer as well as cinnamon to negate blood sugar spikes. Is this nuts, you ask? Maybe. It's worse to have palpitations for 3 hours after eating carbohydrate and feel ill. Could I actually avoid eating the food (pizza, rice, etc) forever? Indeed I could...but why would I when I can just sort of negate the effects it has? Obviously, I don't do this regimen every day, nor every week...but at least I have access to manage carb consumption should I decide to have something that I know will knock me of ketosis for days and cause an overnight water weight gain of about 5lbs. It's kind of like insurance against cravings the next day; kind of like actually having my cake and eating it, too.My husband asked if carb blockers work - yes, not just based on my own research, but they work for ME since I know how I feel if I don't take them before eating wheat, corn, rice, etc. I can eat a little bit of carbohydrate without feeling ill, and I have no idea what my threshold is (I wish I did!). Then he asks, "So, can I eat bagels all day, and this product will prevent the breakdown of the carbohydrate?!" Yeah, I don't think it works that way. I think it will help, but you would have to take a lot of white kidney bean to obtain that effect, and I can't imagine how much abdominal cramping one would have if they took it several times a day.At any rate, sometimes understanding a product and understanding its use makes all the difference. If you are not carbohydrate-sensitive, you likely won't notice the effects of this product. That's not to say it won't provide benefits. I hope this review has helped someone understand what its purpose is and how it may help you.

Good results with thisCarb Blocker!
Irwin Naturals Max Strength Phase II Carb Blocker Softgels, 75 ctWhen I ordered my first bottle of this carb blocker, I was extremely skeptical, to say the least. I am a Type 2 Diabetic, so I really watch my carb intake. I take 2 capsules before, with, or after a meal (the directions say to take 2 caps before starchy meals and snacks, but my personal experience is that they're very forgiving as long as I take them close to the meal or snack I've even gone as much as 2 hours after, because I forgot to take them.) that I splurged on carbs making the meal or snack higher in carbs, even way higher, than the amount of carbs that I should have taken in, Like equal to 3 days worth or more! I do take steps to cut back on carbs over the next few days, but I am convinced that this Carb Blocker works, and I have 2 important facts that back me up. #1- When I began taking the carb blockers I needed to lose 51 lbs., and I had plateaued. Now, weight loss continues, but at a much faster rate, and yes, I need to lose at least another 25 lbs,and that is amazin to me! #2-My A1C readings went down to the point that my Doctor took me off the prescription medication (Metformin) that I had been taking to control my Diabetes for years. This made me so proud, and my Doctor was very happy! I've been off of the medication for over a year now, and I have to say that while I am in charge of my daily carb intake, I absolutely believe that I wouldn't have achieved the success that I have had without the addition of Irwin Naturals Carb Blocker! Plus, it's saving me money, since I don't have to pay for the monthly prescription for Metformin anymore! I trust this product and highly recommend it to anyone who needs to watch their carbohydrate intake!

Really works to block uptake of carbs
I had my doubts when I initially ordered this product, but did notice a considerable difference in my blood sugar levels when I took 2 pills in conjunction with heavy, starchy meals. Many of the starchy items that are present at restaurants also pairs well with the greasy and fatty (think pizza, pasta with cream sauce)and carb blocker also helped to aid digestion of these as well. It does not work on simple sugars or really sweet items. I usually took two pills with each meal, and was grateful that I didn't have to time it 30 min prior to my meals. Unfortunately, I rarely can predict my mealtime. Thankfully, for me and those around me, I did not experience any kind of bloating or gas when I took these. Something I will definitely keep on my list of items to have on hand.

Average Effective Carb Blocker
Warning: All carb blockers are not of equal effectiveness! I've tried five different ones and the most effective one for me has been "Carb-X" Keep in mind, everyone has a different body chemistry, diet, and exercise routine. This carb blocker does not seem to be as effective as "Carb-X" (at least for me. I tested all my carb blockers two or three times by using them for a month, then going off of them for a month and so on. Mind you, I kept up consistently with the same medium carb intake and daily walking exercise regiment, whether I was using the capsules or not. My conclusion is that I lost more weight more rapidly using "Carb-X" than any of the other four brands, including the one I am now reviewing. YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY! You've got to try different products to find what works for you. For example, Using "Carb-X, I could eat an entire small 9" pepperoni pizza while taking four capsules and have no weight gain. (Note: the pizza was mostly crust. Carb blockers do nothing to dissipate the fat in your diet, like dairy products, meats and oils.) With the other carb blockers, I would typically gain about half a pound within a day, even while walking up my 2 1/2 miles of foothills a day. The down side of losing weight by changing your diet, establishing an exercise regiment and using effective carb blockers is if you stop any two of them for even a small length of time, you'll gain back your weight so fast, it'll make your head spin! So you have to discipline yourself for the long haul, essentially the rest of your life. Finally, if you don't take many carbs into your body, you probably don't need to bother with carb blockers at all! Just keep a low fat (30% max of total daily caloric intake), staying far away from transfats, a lot of simple carbs - sodas, sugars, breads, white potatoes, pastas, etc. (eat your veggies and grains, and eat fruits with high fructose content MODERATELY), and get out there and exercise briskly, if you're able. Get your target heart rate up there for about twenty minutes a day, at least three to four days a week to establish a good healthy metabolism. Consult your doctor to see what your target rate should be.) But they will probably tell you to slowly work up to that over about the period of a month to six weeks. Don't overdo it. Put in a good effort, but take however long you need to reach your target rate comfortably. So, what I'm saying is, carb blockers, no matter how effective, cannot help a person lose a lot of weight who insists on a bad diet and does not exercise.
