Fun way to learn to read and write
My four year old is showing a great interest in learning to read, so I've started with the elementary sight words, or common words that found in text that most people will learn by sight rather than spelling them out phonetically. This book introduces the first 100 Dolch sight words that children should get to know to start reading. These words are taught in Kindergarten. Each page can be photocopied to be folded two ways to make a little booklet with four exercises in each quadrant. Each page, or booklet will deal with one sight word where the child has to trace, fill it in a sentence and find in a mini wordsearch. You can get away with not photocopying and just filling out the exercises in the book, turning the book around for your child to complete the page - not an insurmountable problem. We love making up the books. My son keeps them all in a shoebox, and every time we get out previously completed books to review the words. Much more fun than flash cards!

Very useful
I really recommend this for anyone with a child in reception or year 1. If you come across a sight word that they don't know, copy the relevant page, and fold it into a book shape. The activities don't take too long and they all follow the same format so the child gets to know very quickly what they need to do. It is a good way to focus in on one word and reinforce it. It is interesting enough to keep a child's attention in a contained format. I'm using it to introduce my daughter in reception to the early HF words and I'm still using it occasionally with my year 2 child. You need to have access to a copier though otherwise it would be no good.
