"No Longer Human" is considered Dazai's masterpiece and is the second-best-selling novel in Japanese history. Told through three notebooks, the story follows Oba Yozo, a man who feels profoundly disconnected from humanity and incapable of understanding human interaction. From a young age, Yozo adopts a "clownish" persona to mask his deep alienation and fear of others. As he matures, his life spirals through alcoholism, drug addiction, and failed relationships, reflecting the moral and social crisis of post-war Japan. The novelโs title literally translates to "Disqualified as a Human Being," representing Yozo's final transformation into a man who feels utterly estranged from the human race. Author Legacy The novel is highly semi-autobiographical, mirroring many of Dazaiโs own struggles with depression and identity. Dazai committed suicide shortly after the book was completed in 1948. The story has seen a major resurgence in popularity in recent years due to its presence on social media platforms like TikTok. Amazing read
If you're here after watching Bungo Stray Dogs, then you're not alone because that's also how I got here. Obviously, Dazai (anime Dazai) is a direct reference to the author of this work. I must admit with shame, I thought this was a book written as extention of the anime but I stand corrected, this was the original sauce. I personally loved it, but I can understand some may find Osamu Dazai's feelings and personality difficult to 'relate' to, but not all people are made to be related to. Specifically, this book is semi autobiographical and that MUST be taken into consideration. If you like books such as The Bell Jar or The Catcher in the Rye, then you will probably like this book. It's dark, and has no specific plot, mostly consisting of internal monologue. It's beautifully written, but it does take the right mindset and taste in literature to actually "enjoy" or seek value from, in any degree. TLDR; it's not for everyone. But it's good, and a short read.
