How to get out a broken lead out of the mechanism? The feature description says it's removable, but I can't figure out how.

The black ring around the handle turns counterclockwise, then the sharpender mechanism comes out.

Does the sharpener work on thicker Caran d’Ache color pencils?

Yes. My favorite sharpener so far, very well made compared to my Dahle 133 which broke, and my Dahle 155 eats my pencils.

The metal grip has left deep gouges in the barrels of the pencils I’ve sharpened. I’m wondering if this is common? I don’t find it acceptable.

Once I open the grips and put the pencil in, I don’t touch it anymore until I remove the pencil, so I’ve never had that problem.

I need a new desk clamp for this sharpener. Is it sold separately? (I have difficulty using the sharpener since it moves.)

I have no clue. I actually don't use the clamp at all. I put the pencil into the sharpener, then put my left hand on top of the sharpener to hold it in place while my right hand cranks the lever. Try contacting the manufacturer directly (not through Amazon) and see if they have an answer for you.
