Floating Dragon

A little dissapointing
I purchased this one based on all the solid review and liked it overall. That said, It just seemed that some of the content could have been deleted SPOILER: (detailed induced psychosis for some of the characters). I found my self skipping over parts. I did like the main characters and the story overall - kind of reminded me of a "poor man's" 'IT', even though there are only a few similarities

Fine Prose Can't Save RIdiculous Plots and Cliche Characters
Peter Straub has the same themes - and characters - he repeats from book to book. His prose style is above average - hence the two stars - but his plots are ridiculous, full of shark-jumping plot holes, and his characters are caricatures or cliches or both. When I first read him back in the 80s, I thought his books were cool. Now theyare something I have way outgrown.

Your worst nightmare in print
It reads a bit like Alice and Wonderland in that bizarre and treacherous happenings occur to not one person who fell down a rabbit hole, but to a whole town. Imagine throwing the kitchen sink of terror filled threats - bats, giant vicious dogs, dragons, zombies, worms, spiders, madmen, fires, earthquakes, swarms of flies, you name it - and wrap that up in 600 pages. I guess it may be some peoples cup of tea, but not mine.

I enjoyed the read
I enjoyed the read. Borders on creepy, spooky, gross, mysterious, sad, horror...hits all bases. I liked the characters. Straub does a good job of developing his characters and making you feel like you know or could know them. There were times I couldn't put the book down and there were times I left it on purpose. Again, I liked it.

Peter Straub never disappoints.
Having read and enjoyed many Peter Straub books, I was delighted to find one I hadn't read. I was not disappointed. His writing is flawless and the story line kept me reading well past my bedtime. I would recommend the book without hesitation.

Characters with depth and wonderful prose
This is a truly interesting book. It's organized in a disorganized way that not only works it makes the narrative stronger. A great read. I took back a star because ... Well I can't say or I'd ruin the book for you.

Read it!
Great location, a lot of really good characters. Small town against evil. Has a little bit of everything evil (ghosts, Devil, killers, etc.) If you like Straub you'll love it. If you've never read Straub do yourself a favor and read this and you to will be Strain fan for life.

He still has it.
I enjoyed this book. I had a hard time at first, it kind of went in circles. But I stuck with it, and I absolutely loved it. There is non stop action and scares. I would recommend this book to everyone.

A great read
I read this in early 80's when it first came out and thought it was a brilliant read. Just read again and still as good. I presume 'It' came afterwards and borrowed a few ideas. Think this is the better book. Quite appropriate for these Covid times, with the strange flu pandemic caused by the floating toxic cloud released from the Government lab. Read 'Ghost Story' and 'Shadow lands' after this and they were just as good if less 'gory'.

This is book that I recommend. Honestly
I read this book in the 90's but in its Spanish version, when I was in Sixth Form. I must admit that it captured my imagination and interest from the start. The way that the author develops the subtle link among all the events happening in the town and how the main characters were connected, using a bit of local history to explain all the misfortunes befallen to the inhabitants, was very clever and really transported me to the plot itself. This is book that I recommend. Honestly, until I read Stephen King's "It" and learnt about the similarities between the books, I was unaware of identical storylines and endings. Well, both books are among my favourite ones. Despite this, I still like this book a lot and after 20 years, I am pleased to have read it in its original version. Perhaps I am biased by writing this review but it is my personal opinion.
