I'd give 10 stars if I could
This was an amazing book. I don't often write reviews, but this book was so good that I needed to write one. The way the two stories weave throughout the book makes the ending that much better. I'm a teacher and plan on using this as a read-aloud and/or a book study. It was just so, so good.

I enjoyed this with my class
I read this book with my 6th graders. Shows grit and perseverance of a young boy in the face of hardship. I like that my class learned about certain aspects of Africa as well.

Amazing story!
I was searching for a book for my college class about diversity literature. This is a wonderful story; I’m glad I found it and more glad that I read it!

Must read for all ages
I participated in a "walk for water" event held at my daughter's middle school. It was just a fun way for us to spend time together as a family, get a work-out in and do some good as an aside. However, when I heard the real stories and hard-facts presented by the students on the reason and goal of the event, I was awakened from my reverie of comfort and complacency. One of the presentations recommended this book. I picked it up to educate and enlighten my daughter, but ended up reading and learning a lot from it myself. Most importantly, I learned that there was always a way, if one looked for it. Salva Dut found a way to bring clean, drinking water to his parched village 20 years after he was forced to leave it. He brought accessible water to so many villages in his country. A hero!

One step at a time, one problem at a time
In this short but engaging narrative, Park interweaves two true stories—that of Salva, a young Sudanese boy who was forced to flee his village during the civil war in 1985; and that of Nya, a Sudanese girl who is forced to walk many miles each day in 2008 just to retrieve potable water for her family. Their stories do not connect until the very end of the book, but they do so in a powerful and compelling manner. An excellent middle school text that addresses recent history, refugees, immigration, and social activism.

Written for middle schoolers but interesting and informative for adults.
I enjoyed the story being told through the eyes and the experiences of children.

A long walk to wayer
Very informative. Very sad that children actually live like this. Should be required reading for school age . To appreciate what we have in our great country.

A great read!
(I had bought this book for my 10year old son. Below is the review written by him): "A long walk to water gives readers a closer look on how life is in the poorer countries. It tells the stories of two different children in different parts of Sudan: Salva and Nya.Salva is a Sudanese boy who, when gunfire breaks out while he's at school, is forced to go on the run due to the civil war - leaving his family behind. The story focuses on the heart wrenching details of his journey.Nya is a young girl whose story takes place several years after that of Salva. Also a child living in Sudan. Nya's job is to make very long journeys to fetch water for their familyThey face many hardships but always overcome them in some way. it shows us about the true life of the refugees and orphans. It is well written and captivates the reader through the various emotions of the characters.Highly recommended to both adults and children"

It's great
It was a great read and I was surprised to find that it was a true story about a real boy. It was entertaining and serious at times. The main character Salva has a lot of ups and downs in his life. After starting to read the book I couldn't help but finish it in less than a week
