A lesbian film definitely worth viewing
I saw the film for the first time last week, and watched it again a few days later to balance first impressions. The film is essentially about two quite different characters, Dr Noel Benedict and Claire Jabrowski, who meet at a writer's retreat and are attracted despite their discordant backgrounds and values. The dynamics of that relationship form the core of the film and are quite well conveyed. For that reason alone the picture is worth seeing. Karen Trumbo is superb as Noel and Trisha Todd also won my affections in her role as Claire. She had some of the worst lines but is excellent in some moments and I picked those up with delight. It is unusual still to see such such overt sexual tension between women in a film and must have been quite radical at the time (1992). Some moments in the development of that relationship are nicely captured and stay with you, always a good sign in a film. The dialogue and acting are a little stilted at times but on the second viewing I came to see this as quite 'high camp' and and it added to my enjoyment.I identify with the period too. The clothes and customs are familiar and although my social scene was very different from that in the film I still enjoyed it. Noel and Claire were less stereotypical than the makers of the film, I thought, going on the secondary material also available in this DVD. To some degree they appear to be objects of fantasy in their own way but I actually knew women very like these two. Both are stunning. The natural setting of the picture is beautiful and perfectly supports the lyrical fantasy of the relationship between the two women. That is the power of this film. Anyone who has fallen in love with another woman will recognise with a thrill that unique tension and curiosity.I've read other quite negative criticisms of this film but if you locate it in its time and social context and suspend contemporary judgements you will enjoy it immensely. The film was made with limited resources which could explain some of the rougher edges but in a strange way these add to the appeal for me.

Lost Interest Somewhere Between Cliches and Crap!
Some of the worst acting ever! Only k.d. lang’s acting in Salmonberries was worse than this entire ensemble’s. If you want some romance, watch Desert Hearts. If you want a good story performed by truly great actors, rent Tell It to the Bees. But if you want lousy acting, gratuitous sex scenes, and a predictable story...this is the movie for you. The only reason it got 3 stars from me was due to the beautiful scenery along the Oregon coast. Skip the movie, take a trip to Oregon instead!

The scenery, the magnitism between the main actors. Their beauty in expressing their love.
Loved this movie, I felt their love and attraction towards each other. Lived the scenery!

Feels like an Eternity
This is a Classic in lesbian filmdom and so is a must see, BUT it is so bad, it's good. Waiting for the ending seems like an eternity but the final scene is worth it. Maybe.

Still fun to watch after all these years.
The average were around 3.5, which I would say is about right. Both the good reviews and the critical ones were true. This movie, works especially well, when there is either music or silence. I thought that the two actresses did a good job of presenting the conflict, the curiosity and the attraction between them.Where the movie failed miserably was the dialogue. It was trite, pretentious and ponderous-except for the hugging scene. The actress who played Maggie is funny and great at puncturing pretension-and there is a lot in this movie, which is more of a "mood piece". In that way, it resembles Debussy' s "Claire de Lune".

Movie is a 3 1/2 but soundtrack is a 5!
A good examination of the female gender's search for authentic intimacy. With the plethora of good lesbian erotica we have now since Claire came out (pun intended), this is still a good one for us Nicole Conn fans. It deserves an honored place on the shelf next to your overly-viewed copy of 2010's "Elena Undone" if you're anything like me. The soundtrack is fantastic, though, running from classical piano thru C & W, and the best is a really juicy Teresa Trull song, "Would It Hurt?" No, it wouldn't, but you'll be sorry if you pass on this, at least for rental. Nicole Conn understands how to write and stage believable seduction scenes. If her name is at the helm, you need to watch.Trust me on this, girls!

Claire of The Moon - a beautiful, lyrical love story
I really love this film more than any other lesbian film I have ever viewed! And I have watched it many times since purchasing it via Amazon. It is sensitive, thought-provoking, tender and liberating, and I love the musical backdrop and scenic location. The actresses are wonderful, especially the central characters. A great bonus with this DVD is the extra footage with the author, her dreams and aspirations behind both her book and film based upon it. The film 'Elena Undone' is a close second to 'Claire of The Moon', in my humble opinion!

A lesbian romcom
Taking the romcom formula - two people who initially don't get on but gradually make accommodation, culminating in getting together in the last five minutes - and transferring it into an all-female, and lesbian, context. There is precious little comedy, lots of abstract talk about sex, and some atrocious acting from all but the two leads.

Good Feel
Good film by Nicole Conn with two more actors who share on-screen chemistry. It was a bit of a slow burn but enjoyable nonetheless as you could feel the tension mounting between the two characters. I thought Karen Trumbo gave a very controlled performance as the slightly 'buttoned up' professor; a good performance from her but her co-star was less impressive (for me anyway.) I enjoyed it and would recommend it to friends both gay and straight.
