Fits my bill
I really like this flashlight, especially for the price. It is very bright in "full" mode, and in "half" mode it provides adequate light to do the job and conserve battery life. The third mode is "strobe", which I never use, but I could see that would be handy to have to get someones attention. I also like the operation, which is simple and straight forward. Turn it on with one click and it goes to full mode. Turn it off with a single click, then turn it back on with a single click for half bright mode. Turn it off once again with a single click and then back on again with a single click to go to strobe mode. Some people might not like the fact that the flashlight "remembers" which mode it is in. This means that if you turn it off while in high mode, the next time you turn it on it goes to half bright mode, even if that is the following day. For me, this is not an issue. I usually cycle through the 3 modes after I am done using it so that it comes on to full mode the next time I use it. Even if I forget to do that, it doesn't bother me to cycle to the mode I want. The alternative to this is usually a flashlight with a rotating switch mechanism at the rear of the flashlight that allows you to set it to a fixed mode so that it always comes on to the mode you have that set to. From my experience, I don't like that mechanism because it is one more thing that can cause the flashlight to malfunction. I have a few NEBO flashlights with that feature and I used to like it until they malfunctioned.Another feature that is nice about this flashlight is that you can slide the top bezel forward for a tight zoom or backward for wide area span. Simple. Some people might complain that when the flashlight bezel is in the extended position for a tight zoom you get the "square LED aberration effect". I used to think that was a problem, but not anymore because I am used to it. I don't care if the beam is square instead of round, it gets the job done either way.Another thing I like about this flashlight is that it uses 3 AAA batteries which I keep on hand and buy in bulk and are inexpensive. This flashlight does not use them up like other flashlights I have owned. To me, flashlights are a kind of tool like a pair of sunglasses. I don't like to spend a lot of money on them because they can get broken, lost, or stolen easily. For these reasons, you won't see me buying a $100 flashlight (like Surefire) of $100 pair of sunglasses (like Ray Ban). I like to stay in the $20 range. This flashlight is sturdy, attractive, well designed, and for the money ... exactly fits my purposes.

Wonderful Flashlight - Wonderful Value
This flashlight is a wonderful value!Pros:Compact & light weightUnder $20!!Uses cheap & common AAA batteriesBlindingly bright - seriously, don't flash this into your eye!High quality aspheric lensEasy to use switchEasy to change focusCons:Pocket clip is a bit flimsy - but easy to removeNo 'One-touch BRIGHT' mode - you must cycle through. Can roll off a table with clip removedThis thing is cheap and rugged, and I was easily able to find a nylon belt holster for it at a surplus store for about $7. The switch works well and it is easy to focus from wide beam to spotlight - and the setting stays put. Similar to many other flashlights, turn it on and a half-press of the main button cycles through Low, High, and Strobe settings. The spot setting confines the beam to about 10x10 feet at 25 yards - the wide setting lights up my whole back yard tolerably well up to 50 feet away. The J5 flashlight competes with my big Rigid pistol-grip flash which uses an 18V battery pack, but this one fits in your pocket or purse easily. Cheap enough to buy several, one for the bedside, one for the glove box, one for the backpack....Highly recommended!

NOT a tactical flashlight
Decent flashlight for the money. It's certainly bright, and will throw light several hundred yards at night if you focus it down to the narrowest beam setting. The tail-cap button actuates easily, and as noted in the description, a half-tap changes between high, low, and strobe modes. Unfortunately, a full on-off cycle also changes between modes, which brings us to our first (potential) issue: Despite its appearance, this is NOT a tactical flashlight. Trying to fumble through modes (believe me, strobe is very disorienting in a dark room) when split-seconds matter is not ideal, no matter how easy it is to toggle between them. Theoretically you can "set" the light to come on High when you first turn it on by cycling through the other two modes before turning it off, but I have found that regardless of where I leave it set it will default to "strobe" if it has sat for a day or two between uses. There is also no momentary-on function, and toggling the light on and off manually to simulate that function changes modes as noted above. Additionally, the beam pattern is far from ideal for tactical use: Even on the broadest beam setting, there is neither a true "hot-spot" nor any degree of primary scatter - there is just a wide, uniform, sharply-delineated "warm spot" and then nothing. Fortunately the beam is bright enough that you get plenty of secondary scatter to light the rest of the room inside, but outside you are SOL. No word yet on durability/longevity, but I'm not expecting much from something in this price-range either.Bottom line: If you need a cheap, bright LED flashlight for general use, this is a decent unit. If you're looking for something to keep by the bedside or cary on-duty, however, I'd stick with a proper tactical light from proven names like Surefire.
