Not Stellar Sound Quality But Has All the Songs I Wanted
I am not a mega-fan of Dusty Springfield, but have always been fond of her biggest hits like I ONLY WANNA BE WITH YOU, WISHIN’ AND HOPIN’, YOU DON’T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME and SON OF A PREACHER MAN. I settled on this collection a few years ago from Amazon and it has all the songs I wanted and then some. I appreciate that they included WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS, her 1988 duet with the Pet Shop Boys. I have the expanded reissue of Dusty’s REPUTATION album and it only included the extended 12” mix of the song—not the original radio version. My new favorites are the dramatic I JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF (only Dionne Warwick could do the Bacharach material justice this well); ALL CRIED OUT (not a Bacharach song but shares the same style) and especially the intense, upbeat WHAT’S IT GONNA BE that has great background vocals by Ashford & Simpson, Carole King and Madeline Bell.I think this set includes only the mono versions of her Sixties hits though, so while purists may like it, if you are looking for stereo sound quality, this is probably not the set for you. The booklet has a track-by-track breakdown of facts/trivia so that’s a plus.

Catch it if you can
It is not always wise to revisit old loves, because nostalgia can be treacherous. But not this time. As an adolescent in the 60s, I, like many of my peers, fell in love with Dusty Springfield. Forty years later, I listened to this collection, and I am in love with her all over again, only more so. Her voice was very special. From the country-style folk of The Springfields, through the romantic standards, to soulful R&B, she could do it all, and all exquisitely. There are nuances to her singing and a depth of emotion to her voice that I missed first time round. Listen to the unique phrasing on The Son of a Preacher Man, a song that she made her own, and the delicious seductiveness of Breakfast in Bed (which I heard for the first time on this CD) and you will see what I mean. Her life had tragedy in it. In many ways, the sixties were not as permissive as you might think and the British tabloid press were vicious when they caught the rumor that Dusty was a lesbian. This helped destroy her UK career and after that she spent most of her time in the US and the Netherlands. By nature insecure, she could not come to terms with her relative loss of celebrity and resorted to drug and alcohol abuse and even a suicide attempt. Just when she was making a comeback following her collaboration with The Pet Shop Boys and an appearance on the Jools Holland TV show (what a hero that man is; when are we going to have his show highlights on DVD?) she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which ultimately killed her.Among the divas of twentieth century British popular music, she is supreme, and was one of the very few to achieve real success in the US also.It was good to hear The Look of Love on the Catch Me If You Can soundtrack. It will help keep her voice alive for a new generation. That track is on this CD and is just one gem among many. They repay close listening.

Great collection of her music.
Arrived in great condition and well packaged. Thank you.Dusty Springfield was the Adele of the 60's. The beautiful blonde with a soulful voice. She had many hit recordings, although her music isn't played much anymore. This is a great collection and have enjoyed listening to it.

Great One-Disc, Career-Spanning Compilation
The disc to get if you ONLY have room for 1 disc from Miss Dusty Springfield! How could you NOT own "Dusty In Memphis" represented here by 3 tracks ("Son of a Preacher Man" probably being the most famous.) Lead-off track is early Dusty (1962's "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" by The Springfields) to the 1987 closer with the Pet Shop Boys. Good sound, great written career retrospective by Jim Pierson. Really loved the track-by-track liner notes listing songwriter, producer, recording details, original catalog numbers, chart position, etc.) along with background on each track. Can't complain about 20 tracks and great B&W (mostly) and color photos of Dusty in her glorious bouffanted heyday. So glad it includes "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" her inimitable version of the dramatic Italian original composed by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini and performed by Pino at the 1965 San Remo Song Festival. RIP Dusty.

Wow....I Forgot What A Fabulous Singer Dusty Springfield Was....SIMPLY TERRIFIC
This is a wonderful CD fearturing the magnificant singer of the 60's thru 80's Dusty Springfield. Well, I recently saw the Off B'way production of FOREVER DUSTY ..featuring her life story and her music. The actor/singers...especially the leading singer who was portraying Dusty did a fantastic job...the show is a big hit here in NYC. I went to see this show at a Sunday Matinee...and when I got home...I immediately went onto Amazon and ordered this recording along with another CD of Dusty Springfield ...of a country sound...which won her several grammys. Believe me...you won't be disappointed getting any or all of her recordings. She is/was a fabulous singer....what a terrific voice. I only hope that the FOREVER DUSTY MUSICAL SHOW moves to Broadway. If you are visiting NYC soon, please go to see this show. You will love it .

Always been a fan
I think that Dusty is one of the most underrated singers. The songs on this collection are just a pleasure to listen.

This CD takes you for a slow walk down memory lane of the 60's
Great introduction to Dusty Springfields body of work ranging from the late 50's to the 80's. Not the greatest of voices but a competent and reassuring delivery as one might find in an entertainer at your favourite lounge at that point in the evening when one just needs some reflection time. .Wabi sabi performer-joyful in her imperfection...

Majestueux
