I am big fanboy of Carrera slot car systems since multiple decades. Bc of all the negative reviews, let me explain what Carrera First is: Carrera First is a slot car system for very young children, around toddler age. My daughter is two, and she loves it, one of her favorite toys. Common complaints are: the tracks come apart easily: the system is for young children whose little feed step on the tracks, and little hands pull on it. The tracks are out of a soft plastic, perhaps PP or PE, as opposed to PS like the other Carrera systems, where the tracks splinter if you step on them, and the connectors snap if you pull on them too hard. It is super easy to push First tracks back together, they do not break, and even my young daughter figures out herself how to push them back together. The second complaint is the cars fall off the tracks. No, they do not. The cars are speed limited, so that they do not become projectiles and have strong magnets holding them to the track. If the cars fly off, bend the electric pick-up brushes down so that the gap between car and track is reduced. Contrary, if the cars do not drive, straighten the brushes and make sure they are a bit of angle, having contact with the track. It is good idea to align the brushes each time you put a car on the tracks, little hands tend to pick on these. Super easy one second job, once you know what the problem is. Other complaints are that you do not get spare parts. Well, you can via Carrera retailers, even in the US, but since the system is so cost effective, just get another system, and you have more track for a larger layout, a second set of cars, and some spare parts. The system is battery operated so there no danger with power adapter and cords from the wall. The four C-type batteries literally last multiple weeks. If the system is too boring bc the cars are slow, and there are only two types of tracks: straight and 4/90 curves, consider instead the Carrera Go system, which has a ton of exciting track options. However, make sure that your kids are mature enough to know not to step, bend, or pull on the tracks, or fasten them to an MDF plate. And treat the Go cars with care. Go tracks are inexpensive but they do break, particularly the connectors between the tracks. Btw, First cars drive on Go tracks, but the slightly larger Go cars do not drive on the First tracks, bc of the reduced power the system has. If you are an adult kid, and love slot cars, consider Carrera Digital 132, or the non digital Evolution version. (First and Go cars do also drive on Evolution.) Tracks for Digital 132 and Evolution are the same, and you can upgrade cars if you want to upgrade to the more expensive digital later. The digital is however a blast. If you are an enthusiast with lots of space and a four figure budget, consider Carrera Digital 124. Tracks are the same as for Digital 132 and Evolution with additional border pieces to widen the tracks. The cars are huge. First cars cannot be customized, there are some smaller options to customize Go cars, D132 and Evolution cars can be widely customized, eg removing magnets all together, and 124 cars can be their own art with various personalization features and running them in competitions. The small 1:50 First cars are fairly robust, and we did not break on, yet. I hope this helps to explain what Carrera First is, and make the right slot-car purchasing decision for your child - or yourself :-). Definitely a toy that can bring younger and older kids together.
