Does washing in the dishwasher shorten the lifespan of the bag vs hand washing?

It won’t shorten the lifespan of the material in the bag, but you need to be sure to spread the bag across several posts in the rack to ensure that the spray from the arms really gets in there to clean. There have been tips about turning the bag inside out so that it will get clean more easily, but that can damage the corner seals and is not recommended by the manufacturer. Seriously, I find it so easy to just add some water, squirt in a little detergent, close, shake, massage a bit to provide a bit of scrubbing action, and then rinse. Takes all of a minute or so and doesn’t take up excess room in the dishwasher. Be sure to dry the inside of the bag whether you wash it by hand or by machine to prevent any mold growth. We often skip that step, but our Stashers are so frequently in use that they don’t stay around in the cabinet long enough to acquire any mold.

Do they lie flat when not in use? Wondering how I'll store them until I need them.

No. They do not lie completely flat, but you can get them somewhat flat if you squeeze all of the air out of them and close the seal. Otherwise, if left unsealed, the wide end stays puffy.
