Editied movie not the same as the original
A strange fantastical tale of lost love, an evil mother, a wicked selfish sister and consequences thereof. Of how emotions can effect the preparations and the effects of food on the psyche. Crazy at times and never dull. BUT....this movie has been edited form it's original version which I was lucky to see on Netflix years ago. The matches thing was the doctor's Kikapo Indian grandmother's lesson to Tita, who comes to Tita in ghost form when Tita is recovering from the catatonic state she was in. The whole end of the movie is what Tita remembered being told from the ghost. The ghost makes a brief appearance when Pedro gets burned and they use the bark remedy. Why they edited this part of the storyline out is beyond me. But the rest of the movie plot is untouched. Still though the original version is better. Just sayin

A woman denied love by her domineering mother
Like Water For Chocolate is based upon the book of the same name. It’s about a mother-daughter relationship and a love story in Mexico in the 1910s-20s. The daughter Tita (Lumi Cavazos) is constantly told by her mother Mama Elena (Regina Torne) that her job is to be a caretaker until she passes away. Tita of course has a mind of her own and wants to determine her own destiny. That largely has to do with her love for Pedro (Marco Leonardi) which her mother forbids it.The movie tries to capture the feeling of the novel. Hence there’s a narrator that helps explain the story. It also includes the magical realism style of the source material. For instance, Tita cries into a wedding cake and then everyone that eats it starts crying as well followed by vomiting. This was payback for Tita’s situation. In fact, that’s Tita’s gift. She can make people feel emotions through her food. The Mama Elena-Tita ties are more like master and servant than mother and daughter. Mama Elena is downright cruel to Tita. The movie begins with Mama denying Tita the right to marry Pedro and having him marry her sister instead. The conflict between them provides plenty of drama outside of the Pedro-Tita love story.Overall this is a great romance drama that brings a lot of the original book to life.C

A Great Date Movie or Movie Night Movie!
I cannot begin to express how much I love this movie. It is one of those movies that I can watch again and again, especially if I am introducing someone to the movie who has not yet seen it.I first saw this movie when it came out in the theatres, with a dear friend whose family is from Mexico. After the movie he told me "This is just like the stories that my abuela (grandmother) used to tell me." That was high praise indeed. There is truly something for everyone in this movie - and every man I know who has seen it has enjoyed and appreciated it just as much as every woman - so, even though it's based on a grand, undying passion and romance, it is not by any means a "chick flick".In fact, I consider it a perfect date movie. The movie is in Spanish, and subtitled, but even if you don't know any Spanish at all, the subtitles are more than sufficient, and I, at least, found that I barely even noticed that I was reading the subtitles in order to follow along. By the second viewing, I barely even needed the subtitles.Seriously, this is a fantastic movie!

Unhappy long long time customer
False advertising for a sale is certainly not the best way to make money. I checked everything there was to read about this movie, it all assured that it was played in English, English, English. This is the third time I’ve received a movie that has been falsely advertised. We trust Amazon , however; like anything else, you get sloppy, you’ll go down too. Don’t let that happen.

attempts to view on my Blue Disk player proved to be a waste of time
Although the packaging alleges that the disc is compatible, attempts to view on my Blue Disk player proved to be a waste of time. The following message appears on the monitor. "Mismatch between disc and player region codes. See disc packaging for details." Despite the use of an amplifying glass was not able to find any info on packaging. I could have watched the movie on CABLE CHANNEL last week.Have no idea what a "region Code ' is. First bad order from Amazon.

Video never played.
Trying to play this video has been extremely frustrating. I am required to watch this movie for class but all that happened was I paid for a movie I was unable to watch. Every time I tried to play this movie, it crashed after 10 seconds or less. I spent money on a movie I was never able to watch, and I tried troubleshooting every possible solution that amazon or google chrome recommended to me. I spent about an hour trying to fix this, and ultimately gave up because despite all my attempts and efforts, nothing solved the issue. After days of trying to access this movie, I give up. I would greatly appreciate it if I was given a refund. Thank you.

NASTY!!
I was required to watch this movie for a college assignment. People who had taken the class before me had always joked about how horrible this movie was. I thought they were just exaggerating, until I saw it for myself. The plot made no sense, and unless you are a fan of low-budget pornography flicks, this movie will give you nightmares.

A Beautiful Film
I saw this film several years ago and it made a great impression on me then as a very beautiful and moving film that was well crafted which makes it memorable. The strong emotions that are portrayed in this film are of people living in Mexico at that time, are very tangible since they are treated sympathetically. The acting by all the cast is superb and the production is excellent. I bought this when I saw it had been remastered on Blu-Ray and I am very pleased with the quality on wide screen format. This is a film that I will watch again since it is one that deserves repeated viewings.

5 stars for the magic realism....
... But 4 stars overall--as ruined by perversion shining through a H Weinstein production. Nude scenes could have been more artful and in better taste.Five stars for the South American actors. All very good.

Perfection
I first saw this at my local cinema some years back and it went down so well it was brought back again. I bought it on Video and have now purchased the DVD. I have been a lover of the cinema for seventy years plus and regard this film as one of the best I have ever seen. The scene where Tita drives away wrapped in her knitted garment and yards of it flowing behind her speaks volumes about her feelings and the unobtainable man she loves, for me one of the great moments in cinematic history.

bought for educational purposes
I teach A-level Spanish and one of my students was struggling with the original Spanish version, 'Como agua para chocolate'. It's a short book that is quite entertaining. My student was able to use the English version when she needed help.
