Shakespeare 4187 SS Ratchet Mount

This is such an improvement over the flimsy plastic piece it replaced.

My original antenna mount was some type of plastic. Never had a problem with it but the old mount was showing its age. So when I had to replace my antenna, I decided to replace the mount too. And from what I've seen so far, the base/mount seems to be quite study.

I previously had a Shakespeare nylon/plastic mount for our 8' VHF antenna on our boat. Sadly, that one broke after about a year (which was probably my fault since I attached flags to the antenna which probably put way too much stress on the mount). Anyway, this new one is great...it fit the exact same screw holes as the old mount, so replacing the old one couldn't have been easier.If there's any downside to this, it's that the threads don't go all the way around -- there's a gap on one side that's apparently meant to use as a channel for hiding the antenna cable (if your cable exits your antenna through the center). My antenna cable exits on the side, so I don't need to have it running down the center. Visually I'm not a big fan of the gap on the threads -- but it's completely covered when the antenna is in place, so it's not really a big deal.

I adapted one of these Shakespeare antenna mounts for use with an Ubiquiti wi-fi radio on top of our travel trailer. We have used the mount for a few thousand miles, and the only thing I don't like about this mount is that it doesn't allow you to raise the antenna into a true 90 degree (vertical) orientation. Apparently, the manufacturer assumes that the mount will always be installed on a boat with a certain rake / down at the stern.

Item is well made we’ve had it on boat now for awhile and been on salt water a lot with it and no rust doesn’t bind works great.

2 seasons on my charter boat now, in the saltwater of New England. No rust and working just fine. Great value for money- will be buying again for another boat.

Mount is sturdy and serves the purpose but it is nowhere near the quality picture shows. Picture is showing computer generated solid model which has no flaws of any kind, almost perfect.Mount is mirror polished and looks appealing but function is not so appealing, two complaints:1- handle has sharp edges that mate with taper faces of adjustable section, when handle is snugged, these sharp edges produce scrape marks that later interfere with operation.I had to file the handle edges to round and smooth shape to prevent recurring damage.2- Typically of products coming from China, threads are way out of specs, these threads are not machined, instead they are formed by molding the entire part, thread profile is distorted and undersize by about .03" which is a lot when it comes to mating parts with same nominal size threads.Plastic base of my antenna clearly shows partial engagement and damage due to inadequate fitment.Installing some tape over threads before mounting antenna should take out the slack and prevent damage to antenna base threads.

I bought this to replace a type of toy that my cat was frequently destroying. This is solid and locks up smoothly, and has a cutaway for the coaxial cable. As a plus, my cat has zero interest in it, so I assume it will last a long time.
