Dark Light (A Doc Ford Novel)

Another "Goodie" from R W White.
This was an atypical Doc Ford book and story. T here were no drug smugglers or evil Latinos trying to catch and kill him. Instead, it turned out to be an older woman who needed his help. It was an excellent story and others will enjoy reading it!

Dark Light by White
The star rating system is limited and ambiguous. Am I comparing it to other Ford novels, other mystery novels, or all the great novels every written? At any rate, the book is a good read that keeps one hanging on to see how the writer is going to wrap everything up at the end. It offers mysterious occurrences, possible ghosts, Nazis, shipwrecks, beautiful women and plenty of intrigue. I wasn't disappointed at the ending, but left with some questions. That is not a bad thing. I recommend any RWW fan to grab the novel and read it with enthusiasm.

Interesting read
I love reading Mr. White's books about Sanibel and Captiva. As a 3rd generation Floridian, it's fun to read about our history within a fictionalized context. We are spending a few days on Sanibel next month. It will be our first visit since I began reading Mr. White's Doc Ford novels. Many of the places mentioned are familiar to me and I'm looking forward to checking out some of the others! 😊

Best Doc Ford mystery in a while
Wow - I was surprised at the negative reactions from some reviewers, but I understand where they are coming from. In _Dark Light_ White takes readers in another direction than from the previous 2 or 3 installments of his series. However I found the change refreshing and much more reminiscent of the earlier books in the series.Rather than concentrating on Doc's dark, violent past or the looming conflict between his former covert life and his friendship with aging hippie Tomlinson, _Dark Light_ focuses on lost treasure... a metaphor not only for the diamond encrusted Nazi death's head found in a wreck after a hurricane, but also for the development and changes to the Florida the author loves so dearly.White does a tremendous job of weaving a story of sunken Nazi treasure, devious entrepeneurs and hints at a ghost story with the the familiar characters from Dinkin's Bay. For readers not familiar with the series, _Dark Light_ wouldn't be my recommendation to be introduced to the characters - but I do strongly recommend it, even over the last few books written in the series.

This author carries a grudge.
This book was interesting and it had a good plot. But clearly he carries a grudge against Wisconsinites. Time and time again there was insults leveled. Being from Wisconsin I found it quite off putting. I've read several of his books and I've never seen this author carry such a grudge.

Very unusual plot - with a ghost?
With this book I am finally up to date on th Doc Ford Series. This book pushed characters to more bizzare level with the main female character in the form of what? A ghost of a woman who died during WWII, or her niece, or a constantly changing aged woman. During WWII, Florida had many wealthy vacationers, a POW camp, and occasional nazi submarine sightings. One of the descendants tries to find out what happened to her relative and the relatives lover on a stormy night with lots of confusion. Unknown to each other another defendant is sent by his grandfather to area and he also begins to look into occurrences around that same time. Doc, Tomlinson, Jeth Nichols and Arlis Futch (ongoing characters in the series) all join in to dive a wreck of a boat that was on shore patrol that fateful night. Their discoveries and combined research makes a twist at every turn of the page.

A rating for this book, depends upon your life experience.
If you have lived on the southwest coast of Florida, are a deep sea diver, or owned a boat larger than 20 feet, your rating here would be a 5. Otherwise you will still like the story, but will not appreciate the references to boats, Florida and diving..The tale is like a Carl Hiassen book without the humor. Randy's lead character is a marine biologist that collects and sells sea creatures to zoos and researchers. The villain is bad enough to deserve the worst fate possible, and the good Dr. Ford is more lucky than smart or tough.A great read in any case.
