Q: How can it be microfiber AND 100% cotton?

If I am not mistaken it's just cotton not microfiber...you will be happy with this blanket. Good quality.

This blanket sheds horribly! I washed it before putting it on the bed and there were handfuls of fuzz everywhere. Hopefully the second wash won't do the same!

No, the blanket has nothing shiny on it's edges or anywhere.
