Continental Divide [Blu-ray]

Great departure for Belushi has fans and critics continentally divided
I loved this movie when it premiered in 1981. I'd gone to see it several times in succession. It was like a private midnight movie in broad daylight. Even though critics and public alike were divided in their reaction to Belushi's departure from his usual image, he still showed what he can do outside of it. As Ernie Souchak, he was convincing as a hot headed investigative journalist out to expose a corrupt city official. Writer Lawrence Kasdan and director Michael Apted turned the concept into two mini movies wherein the same character would fall in love with Ornithologist Nell Porter in the Colorado rockies, where Souchak is sent in hiding after being severely beaten by the bad guy's henchmen in a dark alley. The rocky romance is often cute, funny, and poignant, and the scenes of Souchak bringing his nemesis to justice, after the murder of a whistleblower, are great fun to watch. Belushi could do drama...very convincingly. If he lived, he might've had a turn in one of the 75 Law and Order shows. Animal House and Blues Brothers were fun, of course, but this movie and the follow-up Neighbors (which I wish was also available on DVD...or at least Netflix) showed sides of John Belushi's talent which were only beginning to shine, but...

Movie is delightful; DVD quality appalling. Caveat emptor!
Loved this movie when it first came out in theaters. Got it in VHS when that came out. Recently replaced with DVD. Sadly, the quality of the DVD makes it completely unwatchable (even when played on a Blue-Ray player, which often improves playback quality). The screen format was "square" (I tried all TV and Blue-Ray device screen aspect ratio settings). The entire picture was washed-out and grainy. The sound track was abysmal. If someone had videotaped a TV playing the movie and sold it in the packaging, the quality would have been a gazillion times better. This would be a totally annoying waste of time even if you got it free. Amazon should NOT be selling anything of this abysmal quality. Run, don't walk away.

John Belusi's best movie
Okay, it is an adventure ROMCOM. But it was fun to see Belusi playing the straight guy, even though he start has his snarky dialog. Great film with the best cinematography you'll see in a Belusi movie. Beware, the technology elements are more a matter of seeing what technology was like a technology eon ago.

John Belushi as a Romantic Lead?
Say what you will, but John Belushi is cast as the big shot investigative reporter for the Chicago Sun Times who uncovers a trail of corruption. Mob ties begin ending lives that have uncovered their deception, including attempts at Belushi's character. The Times sends Belushi off, to lay low, for an uneventful report on an eagle expert in Colorado's Continental Divide. Here's where the romantic lead comes in. Belushi finds the eagle expert not as dry and boring as he first imagined, trying to overcome her dislike of him as an intruder in her private life. Watching Belushi as a loveable charcter isn't that far of a stretch for him, but the romantic lead? Really? Yep - you've gotta see it to believe it. Great shots of nature and tied in story line on preserving our national treasures, the bald eagle.

An Excellent Movie with A Great Story!
This is such a great movie, and it's always been one of my favorites! It's nice to be able to own it on dvd, but I wish it was also available on Blu-Ray, due to all the beautiful scenery. The video and sound quality were crisp and clear, and much better than my old copy on VHS. I really think this is one of John Belushi's best movies, and he and Blair Brown make a great couple. It has a great storyline, and it's definitely well worth adding to your collection.

What a fun movie. I remember it from its first release. I hadn't seen it in years and was very happy when I found it on Amazon. John Belushi as Ernie Souchak was one of his best. Just imagine a Chicago newspaper reporter climbing mountains just for a story. Especially one he didn't want to do. He is sent to interview Nell Porter, an ornithologist ( eagle watcher) who does not want to be bothered with such things. Ernie manages to get into trouble on a daily basis. Of course love nudges into their lives. The way they handle it should be left for you to find out by watching it. It is well worth the time and little bit of money it will cost you. I recommend it to anyone who loves comedy.

Watched this many times, it seems like old friends.
Hard edged city reporter, John Belushi needs to get out of town after threats from the subject of one of his stories. He reluctantly finds himself doing a story about a woman who researches eagles in the high Rocky mountains. The ensuing story line is obvious but who cares? It is fun and sweet and I learned a bit about eagles too. When we want to watch something comfortable this is one we turn to.

Amiable throwback to the Spencer Tracy-Katherine Hepburn battle of the sexes romantic comedies
A one-time Steven Spielberg project that became the first film produced by his Amblin production company, Continental Divide is an amiable throwback to the Spencer Tracy-Katherine Hepburn battle of the sexes romantic comedies that suffers from one big problem: it's not particularly funny. John Belushi is the Chicago reporter who needs to get out of town when a corrupt politician turns on the heat and is reluctantly persuaded to interview Blair Brown's reclusive ornithologist who's been studying eagles in the Rocky Mountains. Cue some spectacular scenery beautifully photographed by John Bailey and some lightweight fish out of water comedy with the odd mildly amusing line "It's so quiet here you could hear a mouse get a hard on" but no real surprises in Lawrence Kasdan's script or co-producer Jack Rosenthal's uncredited script polish. Director Michael Apted keeps it moving along professionally but while it's hard to dislike it just doesn't really take off enough to take it to your heart or forgive the thinness of the material. No extras on Universal's DVD, but a decent enough widescreen transfer.
