One of the Best books I have ever read (in 2 volumes)
I was not until recent years an admirer of General Grant. I came to respect the way he approached war as something that must be won in order for the killing to stop. After reading his memoirs, I have read several books about him. Nothing compares to his personal record of what happened when and why. He had a way of writing that reported things that only he knew and could report. I have read books that I had to keep a dictionary next to me to figure out what the writer had just said. Knowing that his generation made the books a best seller at the time only adds to my thoughts concerning this record of his life.

Well worth reading
It is well written. Knowing that Grant wrote this book at the end of his life, giving a personal account of his life is fascinating to me. He was dying of throat cancer and passed away shortly after he finished it. Great book on a great man.

Wow, a complete History of the American Civil War through the eyes of U.S. Grant.
In anticipation of doing a reread of this amazing (what do I call this, an Essay, a Tomb) I will have a card table and detailed map(s) of the battle arenas of note that were highlighted in this book and utilize appropriate icons to represent the many Armies and units, both North and South that came into play in the many battles and skirmishes highlighted in this book. Have a dictionary or a computer device available so as to learn about the many terms (like corduroy a road) that are no longer in regular use in today's vocabulary. If you like history, especially American History, you will like the learning experience this book will provide.

Good and very detailed
Enjoyed reading this book, very impressed with President Grant’s intellectuals and writing abilities. The book doesn’t cover the life of President Grant after the war. This book is very detailed, a little too much for me. It does show why the North won this war, their vase communicates and endless supply system, plus the number of troops available for battles and backup. This book is for the person who loves the Civil War and wants to know what happened from the horse’s mouth. Learned much about the smarts, ability and character of President Grant.

VERY LARGE BOOK!
I enjoy history. Seems our most controversial leaders are often our greatest patriots. US Grant was one of them.It reads in rather old school verbiage, but I'm also a Grammer enthusiastic. So far, what I have gotten from his memiors is a VERY humble, peace loving, hard working reluctant hero who was graced to lead and battle for our Nation with perfect timing. He was bullied, ridiculed, condemned, mocked and tormented by most political opponents...but thank God, Abe Lincoln knew of Grant's skills and love for our country.Grants story should be FAR more celebrated in our society. In current times...this should be a must read by every single American. In my humble opinion, he was, hands down, one of our Countries greatest Presidents holding office.

Great Read!!!
There's something about General Grant's story of an American patriot who grew up poor but rose to the highest rank in the Union Army. I bought the Kindle version but would love to add the Hard book to my library.

Grant, another great person over looked in history
I have read numerous books on Grant, always wanted to read his memoirs. The day by day accounting for military movement is quite complete, a little over me for I am no military historian. The rest of the commentary is just great, it is like Grant is riding in the front seat of your car with you.The political aspect as Grant explains it seems to be from 2020

your health
i am not finished reading the book, but so far i think it is excellent,Grant seems to be very honest and very intelligent. i am doubtful that, it was there sole aim to free the slaves.it had to be a lot more, than that.while it was a just cause,i am not convinced.

Civil War History by the Man who did the job
You need to know that this is primarily a history of the strategy of the American Civil War. If you are a CW buff this will give you all the information you need to know.On the other hand if you are more interested in the pre-war and post-war and presidency stuff, you are better off with Chernow's biography.Having said that, Grant was a surprisingly good writer and some of his rather dry asides generate the occasional chuckle.

Text ausserordentlich, Buchausgabe grausig
Trotzdem 4 Sterne, denn was anderes hat U.S. Grant nicht verdient.
