Held up well for my weekend project, grip is good and sturdy with sponge to protect your hand. Good enough to go in my tool shed.

Much much easier using a hawk and trowel
I am a handyman and have installed wallboard in several rooms over the years. I would rate myself as a B+ or B wall boarder. I watched a video on spackling wall board, and they recommended using a hawk and trowel, so I would this hawk and a Marshalltown finishing trowel. I can't believe how much easier spackling is with these two tools and how I am now an A or A- Spackler. The hawk allows you to carry the spackle to the joint you are working on, and you do not have to return to the bucket multiple times to refill the blade. The hawk also provides and edge to clean off your trowel as you work. The trowel provides a much different angle of approach than a normal spackle knife. With a normal spackle knife, you are spreading the spackle 5-6 inches after your hand, and it is a little harder to judge the appropriate amount of pressure to apply to the spackle knife. With a trowel, the point of contact is just 1-2 behind your hand, so your hand is much more sensitive to the amount of pressure you are applying. An example would be spreading soft margarine on a piece of toast. As you spread it, it is easy to control the pressure on the knife. Now imagine spreading the margarine with a putty knife that is five inches behind your hand.Give the hawk and trowel a try. You will be happy you did.

The best tool for doing drywall
This tool has a nice large surface area that is nice and flat. I also appreciate the pad at the top of the handle; it isn’t entirely necessary and will probably wear down over time but it’s a nice touch. My only complaint is that the edge of the tool is a little rough and sometimes catches the knife/trowel. Otherwise a great tool!

Great!
This hawk is nice. Not too heavy, nice size, and the handle provides a sure grip for long periods of use. The plastic shipping envelope provided no protection for the corners of the hawk which were beat up and required smoothing to eliminate jagged edges caused by getting thrown around during shipping. Either a box for shipping or securing some plastic or rubber edges to the hawk might have prevented this damage. All things considered, it is very nice.

Better than a mud pan...
This is the first time I used it to apply drywall compound and it was so much easier than using a mud pan.

Great for amateurs too!
I only ever do occasional small scale home renovations/improvements. Still I found this hawk to be a worthy investment. It might be tempting to use a bucket or some plastic container as a makeshift solution to save a few dollars, but the amount of time you save and the improvements to the overall quality of your work by using professional tools alone makes it worthwhile. The hawk was very comfortable and easy to use and clean. I know it won't rust or degrade with age in anyway, so I can use it for many years to come.

lightweight, comfortable handle, cleans easy
I've been using a big aluminium hawk for the last 5 years, which finally wore out on me.I switched to this one 6 months ago.I wish I had switched much sooner.Light weight, comfortable handle, so much easier to clean. My one recommendation: If you have a trowel bigger than 12", you may wish to go for a hawk larger than 12".
