Do you have to use the docking station? Or can you plug it straight into the cord?

You can plug the cord directly into the razor. You do not need the docking station to charge it..

Is there a product like this that works with the series 9? I really need some beard guards for this razor.

No, the Series 9 shavers only have a replaceable shaving cassette - no attachments.

Does this shave the head clean?

Yes, and you can shave dry, wet, or with a non-abrasive preshave to get the best shave for your needs.
