Well written and gripping
Well written and gripping, but an abrupt and disappointing ending. The way the story was written made you invested in the main characters journey, but the ending came across vague and rushed. Such a shame as it has great potential.

Great insight into sleeplessness
This psychological thriller drew me in from the start and I found the descriptions of suffering from insomnia very insightful and through them, could identify with how it made Becky feel. The story line moved quickly enough to keep me turning the pages but I did find the ending a bit of a disappointment which left me hanging and wanting to know more. The large spacing between every paragraph made for disjointed reading but this could be easily addressed. I’ve given the story 4 stars as it kept me engaged and I wanted to read to the end to discover the outcome.

Good concept
This is an interesting and dramatic, but very simple, concept which might have worked better as a short story. As a novel, it was too drawn out and slow-paced and therefore the impact of what could have been a powerful ending was lost. Could have done with a robust edit to sharpen up the prose.

Mindbendingly good
So well written, so much to take in. What is real is it all in her mind who really knows. Hooked from the start and never wanted to put it down. Such a good read. Even after finishing this I'm still thinking about how it ended. Feel like my mind has Bern playing games. Loved this book but still have so many questions.

Psychological thriller that has you questioning
This psychological thriller has you questioning to the end what is going on? Becky is a uni student who suffers chronic insomnia. She snatches minutes of micro sleep throughout the dayBut when someone starts following her is it a malevolent stalker or is it all in her head.It was interesting and intriguing and did have me questioning what was actually happened. Not something I’d read againBut would make a good 90s slasher style movieWithout the slasher side obv and more psychological thriller but yea would transfer well onto screen

A nail bitter
This book is not just about insomnia but is a study of the effects of chronic sleep deprivation on the mind of an already traumatised, grief stricken young woman. As a person who has never suffered from insomnia, I was fascinated by how lack of sleep could impact the mind and lead to paranoia. Eighteen year old Becky Braithwaite tells her story in a heart-felt and gripping way and I found myself in total sympathy with her plight. Her insomnia was brought on by the death of her brother, Jordan in a car crash two years previously. Her body clock is screwed up and the therapy she attends doesn't really seem to help as she descends into a reliance on medication. I really felt sorry for Becky as she becomes more dissociated from those around her.Becky tries to escape from the trauma and make a new life by starting at Wessex University. The lines between reality and fantasy become increasingly blurred and Becky suspects that she is being stacked by some unseen sinister force. This book is quite short and the narrative moves along at a good pace. The ending hit me like a ton of bricks and was somewhat sudden and not what I expected, though it does leave a few questions unanswered. The writer shows considerable skill in building up suspense and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller with a totally unexpected ending.

I Can't Sleep
A suspense-filled read with great characterisation. If you enjoy a read where you're not sure whether to trust the central character's version of events, you'll enjoy this one.Becky who has suffered from insomnia since an event two years previously is starting her first year away from home at University. Bit by bit we learn of the event from her past as Becky becomes increasingly paranoid that someone is stalking her. Someone who knows her past and what happened two years ago. As her stalker plays tricks with her mind fuelling her paranoia we learn that Becky's mental health issues started earlier than two years ago. Is any of it really happening, is it all in her mind or is she the person responsible? You won't know for sure until the final twist.

Too depressing.
As some of the reviewers have said, this book will leave you thinking.......Sleep deprivation. Not good for body or mind. Becky is trying to function normally at university without sleep. It's not working out so well.I felt the book drug on at times. And was just too depressing for me to enjoy. The story was interesting with good characters. The narrator did a nice job of relating the characters and their attitudes. There just wasn't anything exciting going on.I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from Story Origin.

Just how badly can lack of sleep mess with you? Read ‘I Can’t Sleep’ to find out.
Becky suffers from severe insomnia due to a traumatic incident in the past that robbed her brother of his life. Nothing has ever been the same, and although she tries make him proud by following the path he had lain out for himself, it seems she cannot escaper the dark past. This was an interesting story written in the first person narrative where the reader is torn between wondering if someone is playing mind games with Becky, or if her sleep deprivation is at fault. The writing style took some getting used to and felt a bit more tell than show for me, but the plot had enough intrigue to keep me wanting to find out if Becky would ever discover what is really going on, and if she will finally get the rest she needs. I’d have loved to have seen more of some secondary characters or progress with her parents since there seemed to be a disconnect since the loss of Becky’s brother. However, the story was about Becky striving to find normalcy again despite her insomnia holding her back.I won’t spoil the ending, but it was a shock that I hadn’t expected and I’m still not entirely sure how I felt about it. I entered the story hoping Becky would find some sort of closure and at least an optimistic ending/start to the next portion of her life. Instead… well I guess one could say she finally got to rest. For me, the ending left me with more questions than answers, which might have been exactly what the writer was aiming for. If so, J.E. Rowney definitely succeeded.I enjoyed the story, the concept and the layers of mystery following Becky.

not sure
I found the story hard to get into, the real reason behind Becky’s issues were not evident until about the last chapter, then I began to understand what was really happening. Not the most engaging story I have ever read

Not worth the hype.
Slow burn. Dragged in. Not a whole lot of mystery. I would not recommend this book. I found it to be predictable
