The Last Seduction [DVD]

The Last Seduction is no Body Heat
Linda Fiorentino resembles Lauren Bacall on the cover photo of The Last Seduction: cigarette and all!Besides, the classy cover shot Fiorentino then exudes little class but plenty of trashy language and promiscuity to burn (to put it mildly). But, yes, she is a woman with a modern film noir, femme fatale plan.Peter Berg plays the male lead who gets drawn and sucked-in to Linda ‘s greedy scheme.Without saying too much—The final sexual resolution is preposterous.3.7 starsReleased in 1994 directed by John Dahl. Video release by Artisan 2002 in a 1:33 original format. Full Screen pic is not bad. But should this be in a widescreen(?) is a good question. The Last Seduction is not as entertaining or intriguing, sultry or, really, anywhere near as sexy and mysterious as Lawrence Kasdan’s (modern) noir classic Body Heat (1981).

Simply one of the best films ever
I can't say enough about this film.It is my favorite. It such a favorite film that when I came to new Yok and didn't have a "drink" when going to bars, I ordered a Manhattan like Bridgitte and to this day I still drink it.What make sthsi film so good to me is one, she's smart and two she doesn't pull back. It would've been easy to have her chicken out and go good girl at the end. But Bridgitte has her eyes on teh prize from beginning to end. Whether you consider her the Devil or a tarnished angel she doesn't stop. Also she thinks. Its so wonderful to see someone sit down and have to figure out a problem, to have to plot a manipulation, to leap at opportunities that may mean nothing and MAKE them mean something.I like the fact that she plays every card in teh deck: sex, homophobia, lust, race, anything it takes to in a sense stay alive. Now this may seem liek a throughly evil person but there points in this film where Bridgitte does "crack" or try to really be herself. There's teh one where Mike asks who she is, what she's doing and she tries to explain to him abotu her husband and the money while playing pool. He doesn't take her seriously. For two reasons, he doesn't think she's that smart or capable and he can't fathom himself doin git either. One thing I'v elearned is that the smarter you see yourself. The more capable you feel about yourself the easier it is to understand others even if their goals and methods are opposed to your own. It takes smarts to see smarts. There's also the point where Bridgitte has been forced to fake the accident with the private investigator. Before she leaves and is caught, she tries to have Mike comfort her, to really listen to her. But two things have happned. She's playe dtehgame so well that her sincerity comes across as false and two, he doesn't want someone without secrets. Who doesn't have the upper hand. Some people are drawn to being destroyed by others because it validates their existence. If someone would take the time to destroy you it means that you exist, that you have meaning. But Bridgitte does crack here, she's ready to fess up and be with Mike as an equal and he blows her off to play hockey. Her voice even cracks and in some ways we can see how Bridgitte is the way she is because no one is a race horse like she is. That she is tougher because the disappointment of others has made her tough to begin with. That honest emotion I can relate to and it's why I like Bridgitte. If she was just uncaringly evil, she'd be no fun but you understand why Bridgitte is the way she is if you look at when she lets her defenses down.Above ll else she is teh concummate chess player, understanding that the game is never to the pieces your playing with but to destroying the other side. Being cut off from runnign because of her husband's debts and her desire NOT to run has boxed her in into not so much fighting in the way that men or women perceive fighting btu teh way thinkers do. A thinker knows that everythign and everybody is a weapon or a defense in a fight. That each word is a calculation, that each action should mean or be about something and seeing that ability on screen is what makes thsi film on my top 3 favorite films of my entire life. And I've seen tooooooooooooo many movies to say that lightly. Another film on that short list is Fresh.

Excellently Acted Neo-Noir Erotic Thriller with a Female Antagonist
This is a 1993 Neo-noir erotic thriller directed by John Dahl, with Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, and Bill Pullman. Fiorentino's performance generated talk of an Oscar nod but she was ineligible because the film was shown on HBO prior to it being released to the theaters. Written by Steve Baranck. Finally, we have a film that gives us an genuine evil woman. We hope that she will stay that way, but, honestly before the end of the movie some change always comes over them to make them "good". To our delight, that never happens. She stays evil until the very end. Never realizing the error of her ways, with not a smidgen of contrived moral insight. Therefore, this is a very good film. Good before its time where the antagonist is a woman doing things that are usually written for a man!Bridget's husband Clay is training to be a doctor in heavy debt to a loan shark who has threatened his life. To pay him off, he sells cocaine to a drug dealer for $700,000. Afterwards, when he is home showering, Bridget, takes all the money and leaves for Chicago. With Clay hot on her heels, she stops in a small town where she meets Mike, then decides it might be a good place to hide for awhile. Bridget changes her name, gets a job, and rents a house and starts to manipulate Mike into killing Clay.I liked this movie. There were more twists and turns and surprises than I had seen in a long time with everyone lying to everyone. The DVD's sound and picture were perfect, it has a very good Special Features, front and back covers are in English. The film won 6 Awards, and was nominated for 3. Ms. Fiorentino won 4 out of the 6 Awards for her excellent performance.

Made me laugh
Great film, Linda Fiorentino is a tour de force as Bridget. I remember all the fuss when it came out about the amoral female lead, the sex scenes etc. etc. - times have moved on and its nothing like as "shocking" now and can be appreciated for the pitch black comedy and the great performances. A highlight for me was the scene where naughty Bridget immobilizes the detective who's been set to watch her movements by playing the ideal homemaker. Also included is a director's cut and a short of "Fallen Angels" which I was very glad to have for my Bill Pullman collection as its not available anywhere else.

Immensely enjoyable
An immensely enjoyable movie from the stable of late 'eighties, early 'nineties neo-noir classics. Made by the guy who directed Red Rock West, this has a diabolical villain played with relish by the ferociously sexy Linda Fiorentina who is bad all the way through to her bones. Men don't stand a chance and don't come out of this movie looking too smart either. There's a lot of table turning of the rules in this ingenious plot which engages end entertains in equal measure. Highly recommended.

Great film, Blu-ray could be better
The film is superb, one of my all-time favourites, worthy of five stars, with a brilliant lead performance from Linda Fiorentino, however the Blu-ray could be better, the picture seems very grainy at times. Strangely, the DVD version of the film on the second disc looks sharper to me, however this is the extended version - a good idea in principle, but as it turns out the extra scenes are all basically rather poor video quality (with an on-screen timecode), and so are rather jarring, they'd be better just left as deleted scenes in a special features section rather than incorporated into the film. Unfortunately there is no option to play the film on the DVD without the extra scenes (not that I could find, anyway!).
