Very firm, acts just like a mechanical pencil as far as clicking out the eraser and retracting it. A lot better than that Pentel one they have at Office Depot that is round and not triangular like this one.

This eraser works so well! I like the pen-like grip. The triangle shape of the eraser and its sleeve is unique and comfortable to hold. The purple color is gorgeous!

Why this isn't the standard retractable eraser I'll never be certain. These things work so much better than their rounder counterparts and don't make that annoying clicky sounds that drive my co-workers batty.
