Healthcare Career-Enhancing Tool
Funding is essential for most every academic, professional, and business pursuit. Drs. Gitlin, Kolanowski, and Lyons have crafted a comprehensive, 401-page guidebook that informs health and human service professionals about how to effectively pursue external funding to support their research and educational initiatives. The authors rightly assert that “[g]rantsmanship is an integral part of the professional career of health and human service professionals, whether in academic or practice settings” (p. 29). Divided into seven logically arranged parts, Successful Grant Writing begins with “Why Write a Grant,” and traces the grant preparation process systematically all the way through managing a grant award. Particularly valuable is a three-page table of key resources for identifying potential funding opportunities (pp. 39-41).To help build context, readers are introduced to the language of grantsmanship. Importantly, grant seekers are encouraged to begin with a comprehensive literature review of their particular topic. They are guided to use Judith Garrand’s Matrix Method to read, analyze, and synthesize scholarly materials about a specific topic. Grant-making organizations always want to see how one’s proposed project addresses gaps in and adds to knowledge in the field, as well as aligns with the funding organization’s mission and related broader societal goals. This book offers practical guidance to professionals new to the grant proposal process. For example, building professional credibility as a Principal Investigator (PI) by serving on peer-review panels is suggested. When I was standing front-and-center before my four academic advisors defending my dissertation, I was instructed to characterize my entire research project in words that my grandmother would understand. That was a major challenge, but one that I surmounted. The authors here offer rules for clear and effective grant proposal writing. Number one on their list is: “Stay away from jargon” (p. 96). Know how to articulate the essence of your project in everyday English, without hiding behind specialized or arcane terminology.Aptly, the authors devote especial attention to preparing the budget associated with the grant proposal, which is part of the package submitted to the grant-making agency (e.g., National Institutes of Health [NIH]), institution, or foundation. Key budget-related terms are defined, and basic components of the budget are presented. As with other types of proposals, grant proposals are reviewed by subject matter experts. The authors provide insights into the structure of the review process, and the resubmission process should one’s proposal be deemed unacceptable on the initial review.Several recommendations for the Sixth Edition of this book. First, provide additional discussion of literature research sources and tools, such as MEDLINE, LocatorPlus Catalog, CINAHL Plus, Embase, Scopus, and PubMED Central, which was introduced briefly on page 350. Of particular note, show how to leverage compelling graphics to tell the story of the proposed project. How does the researcher’s project fit within the larger context of the scholarly literature? What is the theoretical home for the topic (e.g., Theory of Planned Behavior)? How does the project align with the grant-making organization’s primary mission? These modifications will make an excellent resource book even better!Replete with useful tables and figures, as well as a helpful index, Successful Grant Writing reflects the combined, real-world successful grant experience of three highly accomplished academicians and practitioners. Reasonably priced, and well worth your investment as a career-enhancing tool.Dr. Robert S. It’s was reasonably priced
Reasonably priced considering the university and other sellers. The print is too small for me to read because I have impaired vision. I hope I can sell it back or return it.
