This is a great book. I have lots of gardening books
This is a great book. I have lots of gardening books. Shelves full. But if you want to build a SoCal food forest and you want something to read on the train or in a doctor's office, this is the book. I still own the Sunset Western Garden Book and I go to that when I want more detail or non-edible info. I do suggest buying either of these books for your friends that are just getting into gardening, or give them your copy and buy a new one. I have been using the Western Garden Book since the late 60's or early 70's. I update to the new one each time. This is necessary as there are so many new varieties of plants and edibles designed for low water and low chill required by SoCal gardeners. I have multiple books on permaculture and I keep hoping for one that is complete for the SoCal climate. At this point I still like Mollison's original texts, any one will do. I have found very little new in the recent offerings. I find on line bloggers and chats more useful, but still feel permaculture is a fledgling field, so I just use this book and collect my notes, trial and error style like everyone else.

This book has been so helpful in starting my garden. It gave me excellent details and all of my vegetables I was growing from seed have sprouted right away and are already being planted without issue. It has some great details and I think it goes a bit more in depth on some of the plants compared to the Sunset's 2014 Western Garden Book. I bought both at the same time and they're both useful. It shows beautiful pictures of the plants, tells you the difference between the specific versions of the plants and when they ripen. It tells you what to do from seed to harvest. How much sunlight, water, and the type of soil. In the front it goes over the climate zones like Sunset's Western Garden book. In the back it also has some good tips. I originally saw it in the store but came home and Amazon had it cheaper. I am VERY happy with this purchase and it arrived quickly and undamaged. Between the two books I do not think I will need any other books to keep my garden growing strong and have a great harvest at the end of summer.

The perfect gardening book for my area!
I live in Central California and I had not found a book that would mention how to grow fruits and veggies here in my area until now. This book has everything on how plant a garden from start to finish and then some. What a wealth of information and so complete!Sunset Western Garden of Edibles covers everything you would need to know about gardening in the Western US. I particularly like how it explains in detail with pictures the different types of watering systems that can be used for your garden. It is hot here in the Central Valley during the summer months and when and how to water has always been a hit and miss thing with me but this book explains which system would be suitable for your particular area.I read the book from cover to cover and I learned a lot of things! This book is the best!

definitely 9 out of 10
I don't have much time but I still want to grow some of my own food in my own little yard! I've tried it for a few years with sometimes good sometimes OK results. This book has turned me on to growing things I would've never considered, like carrots, spinach, lettuces, rhubarb, swiss chard, radishes, and a few others. The results have been explosive compared to what I was expecting! The experience is what will help me do it better in the future, but this book is responsible for getting me to try them. Everything is in here, and each item has a 1-3 page entry. My only complaint (if you call it that) is that I would've liked another sentence or two per entry about whether or not it's worth attempting in the summer, since lots of things I've planted have begun to bolt. But again, its the experience that counts. Next year, I'll start them earlier so I can get more.

Great book for new gardeners.
This book is a great reference guide for those starting out gardening. It gives you information about many varieties of edibles as well as how to grow them. It tells you the best site, yield, soil, planting, spacing, water, fertilizer, pruning & training, harvest and challenges for each edible. Because of it's simple layout, I am able to flip to the information that I need in no time. I highly recommend this book!

Over weight - worried about heart disease, diabetics and arthritis need a new diet?
I have dropped 130 pounds all due to changing what I eat - Now how to build a garden - create my raised beds - learn how to compost - and then - I am reading - the information is there to grow my own veggies. At age 82, I need to keep busy - and I sure am enjoying what I am doing. Everything is there except the prescription for health.Bruce Young
