Powerful Reflection on Politics, Immigration, and Religion
How very special to re-view this film in the context of the current (2016-17) political posturing and railing on immigration. This film effectively traces our national obsession with immigrants, and the tendency assimilated immigrants have with keeping unwanted -- i.e., new -- immigrants out back to the fifth and sixth decades of the nineteenth century. Here the despised immigrants are Irish Catholics, and Scorsese is able to resist pointing out that these nativists were themselves immigrants a generation or so back. The film ably links violence committed in the cause of nativist politics with religion, and an unforgettable montage shows leaders of both factions praying for divine assistance during the slaughter both are willingly invoking at the coming dawn, while city leaders pray for a prosperous and safe New York. All of this goes on in the foreground of the late years of the American "Civil" War (no war is "civil") and Lincoln's conscription acts, historical moments on a massive stage -- but mere annoyance and background noise to the nativist and immigrant warriors.Be advised: it's bloody, violent, and at times cruel. Human lives and bodies are thoroughly quantified. That's the point. The directing is savage and at times simply brilliant -- surely among Scorsese's best. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz are excellent in their portrayals of differing participants in the conflicts. But Daniel Day-Lewis is at his very best -- and that's a high bar -- in his unforgettable portrayal of Bill the Butcher. It's possibly his best work to date. Then again, many of his other work is close. Settle in to be shocked and awed by this one.

History of New York City
Ok I'm a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, putting that aside This is a good movie with gripping storyline and the History of New York City and the battle of heritage and bloodlines. It a happy, sad and well made move. Yes I have watched it More than once. I recommend you add it to your list of must see movies.

A Damned Fine Piece of Cinema
Historically accurate? Not extremely so, but hellaciously entertaining. The film also serves as an opportunity to mull over immigration, its history, and how we became so diverse as a nation. Diversity is critical to the American identity, which is something we should bear in mind today. Plus, the film is directed by a genuine member of the Film Pantheon of Gods, Martin Scorsese, which is a big deal. The Five Points (current day Chinatown) was a hub of merging cultures, in large part Irish and African American, which the film pays a nod or two to (the tapdancing scene, for example). Also, as good as Dicaprio and Diaz are, Daniel Day Lewis's portrayal of Bill "the Butcher" Cutting is simply genius. Note: there was a real Bill the Butcher, but shared only a few similarities to the character in the film. There's good reading out there relating to the fact versus fiction of the film, so if that's your cup of tea, spend some time on Google. Otherwise, enjoy the movie for what it is, a damned fine piece of cinema.

Good Flick!
Daniel Day Lewis is without a doubt the best actor I ever had the pleasure to watch. There Will Be Blood literally had me forgetting to breathe. This guy is a legend and he played quite a unique and demanding role and pulled it off with perfection. The costumes were phenomenal, the acting was award caliber as is all movies Lewis plays in. Kind of blah story as it's about New York in the early days when gangs ruled the land.

Great story about the Irish diaspora gaining political strength in a hostile environment.
A fair portrayal of the Irish immigrant community surviving in spite of religious bigotry.

If you have any interest in the history of NY...watch it.
Normally I write fairly long reviews, but I think I can get through this one pretty quickly. The plot of Gangs of NY is not especially remarkable. It involves well-worn themes from Mafia films like honor, revenge, family and the desire to get away from this violent world, and the characters are nothing particularly new either. There's certainly nothing wrong with this plot, and it has some fine lines and a few particularly affecting scenes, but it's nothing to get to overly worked up over. Still, the sheer craft displayed herein makes the film remarkable. The performances are all nearly perfect, the score, while perhaps overly conventional, is powerful and emotive, the cinematography is consistently stunning and the period detail is utterly convincing. Again, this is a world we've seen before, but it's more fully realized then ever before, and it makes the film nearly mesmerizing even in the scenes where little is actually going on. Also, there's one scene late in the film, a firefight in the streets during fierce storm, which is simply breath taking. It's definitely one of the most powerful examples of pure cinema I've seen in a long time.
