Can the drill use a higher voltage battery? Do batteries have to be black & decker to work with the drill?

Yes. Some suppliers make knock-offs of B&D batteries, and there are some that may be more powerful. But it has to be an exact duplicate of the surface, to fit the slots of the drill. Most alternative batteries will tell you what models they fit.
