DX Magilegend Manticore: Worst Megazord, Ever.
This Megazord is what put me off of collecting Bandai Power Rangers Megazords for several years. It looks really cool, but it hardly transforms at all. I love any robot with a lion or tiger scheme so at first this was really appealing. And visually, it looks fine. I still keep it on the shelf with my other robots. But out of the box it was a disappointment. It just basically bends over & goes from robot to lion mode. You don't even do it manually, it electronically self-transforms. In lion mode, you turn it on & send it toward the firebird, and as the lion goes underneath the flame wings, it couples with the firebird, snapping the firebird automatically onto its back, then (rather slowly) it stands up. The only other thing it does is scoot forward in robot mode, spinning the spear, which IMO looks kind of silly (look up "DX MAGILEGEND Manticore Megazord" on youtube if you want to see it in action). All this electronic automatic "transforming" (if it can really be called that) was supposed to be impressive, and I guess it might have been if it wasn't a PR zord. But the whole reason I liked megazords in the first place is because they are transforming gestalts that are fun to put together & take apart. It was a key element of the show & the toys. I never really liked electronic toys that move on their own in the first place, of any kind, so when I found out that's what this toy did I was less than impressed. It might make a little kid happy to have this thing "perform" in front of them, but I really prefer a hands-on transformation.Because the space inside the robot had to be used for the motor, it gives the whole thing a big blocky look. It's hardly posable, even compared to the typically limited posability of any other megazord. Of course this is also why the zord is not made up of several separate units, as well; all the space inside is utilized by the electronics. The firebird looks OK except for its arc-shaped wings, which have to be like that in order to prop it up so the lion can go underneath. I can't be the only one who didn't like this design, because I read a lot of fans complaining about it at the time it came out, and it did not sell very well. Right after, Bandai went back to the formula that works best, and once again began making megazords with team zords that combine (manually, thankfully) to form the megazord. Like I said, I don't have any complaints about the look of this toy, it's just not very fun to play with. Once you've seen it do the transformation thing a couple times it becomes redundant.Oh there is a red ranger you can have ride the manticore's back when it's in bent-over mode, but the ranger looks ridiculous because his legs stick out straight. Very awkward looking. Anyway, the toys is made out of durable plastic as always, and if all the stuff about it self-transforming doesn't put you off, then it's a decent enough toy. If you are expecting it to be like all the other Megazords like I was, & you're not a fan of electronic toys, then you're going to be disappointed.
